Trouble is our winter drags out so long. We have another two and a half months to endure and most of our old weather and snowfall comes between now and spring. (which seems to come late).

I am not sure if it is true but I heard once that 0 F is when brine
freezes. I can guarantee sea water will freeze because we saw plenty
of that in the North Atlantic. Any part of the ship that was not
internally heated from inside was covered with ice. Usually the decks
were OK, just because there was no insulation and we kept the inside
pretty warm. Once you got out on the wings of the bridge or anywhere
else that was open on both sides it was 2" of ice or more.

I saw a breakdown of what towns use for road treatments. Brine is
simply a mixture of rock salt and a liquid and is usually put on
roadways just before expected snowfall to prevent icing. Like rock
salt, it isn't effective below about 12 degrees though.

The problem with brine in this recent storm is it would just be washed
away due to the heavy rain and sleet. Some areas tried it but the temp
dropped so fast it caused a flash freeze as the sleet got heavier before
changing over to snow. Rock salt has been spread but it has not got
warm enough to activate it yet, so the roads are just ice-packed with a
mixture of sand and salt on top, waiting for the temps to rise.

There are other chemical based road treatments that will work at lower
temperatures but most of the smaller town budgets can't afford it.
Places like Boston and other major cities use it.

My oldest niece was commenting that it was warmer in Anchorage than it
was in Maryland and I pointed out that the effect of the ocean
actually gives a lot of southern Alaska a more moderate climate than
lots of places in the lower 48. The temps in the Kenai are more like
Seattle than you think of about Alaska in the winter. On the flip
side, it does not get a lot warmer in the summer. This place is really
like Pac NW, particularly when you get down around Seward or Homer.
Now if you really want to see a change of seasons, go to Fairbanks
:-)
