Nah, gotta be new. OK, then you can't complain about the price. True. His dad's going to see what the school recommends once he gets accepted. I'm figuring somewhere between$2-3K. Sounds like a lot to me. What are they doing to need that much power? |

Here's an example: http://www.amazon.com/HP-Spectre-x360-13-4102dx-2560x1440/dp/B0114P9QM2 Don't buy any software. He'll be able to get it at *much* cheaper student rates when he's in college. It's unlikely that you'll get much of a discount on hardware however. Amazon will probably have better prices for that. |

Sounds like a lot to me. What are they doing to need that much power? I don't know. He only wants a 13" screen. Here's what he had on his Christmas list (which ain't gonna happen). "13 inch Macbook Pro (256GB storage model) w/retina display 3.1 GHz Dual-Core Intel i7, turbo boost up to 3.4 GHz, with 16 GB RAM" He said, when I asked him why he needed so much power, that the software they used in the biomed arena required it. His dad will check him out though. Just the fact that it is Apple adds a grand right on top. Can he run a windows machine? |

IBM had a significant education discount but it may be gone now that Eduquest is gone and it is all Lenovo. |

Sort of like school sports locked to Nike, etc. |

Find someone who has a friend or relative who works for Apple. They can get you family pricing. I think it was 20% discount. |

"Sounds like a lot to me. What are they doing to need that much power?" Gaming....that's what my son says to me.......usually followed by how little capability I need for what I do. That is true. Game machines are usually 3x what a regular person needs for just about anything and if you are just "computing" (not doing video mostly) the needs are very modest. You can do just about anything you want with audio, using a P1 166. If you are only doing bookkeeping, word processing and database work, that is still a lot more machine than you really need. I will say "Flash" has become very bloated. With Flash 10 you can watch Netflix and the like with a 2gz P4 and a gig of RAM but if you load 20, you need at least a 3g P4 or a dual core and 2G of RAM to see the same content. I have both running side by side and there is no difference I can see on a 60" TV between Flash 10 and 20. It sounds like the scam Andy Grove and Bill Gates came up with that Grove will make faster machines and Gates will puff up the software to sell them. |
