Default Sailing boston harbor islands

Just bought a 22' crysler and want to sail in and arround the boston harbour
islands with my kids for a week in august.
Where is a good place to launch the boat and store the truck/trailer for the
week?
Thanks Peter

I was waiting to see if any of the local trailer-sailors replied, but I can at
least give some 25 year old info.

The in-town marinas (Boston, Charlestown, Chelsea, etc.) don't have facilities
unless you want to pay for a hoist. There are several ramps on the Charles
River, but don't even think about that next week during the DNC, or for a few
days afterwards. I used to use the public ramp in Winthrop, which gets you
pretty close to the middle and outer islands, but I don't know how security
would be for a one week stay - you could call the Winthrop Harbor Master. There
are also a few public ramps in Dorchester, but security is probably a bigger
issue there.

Were you planning on daysailing, or doing a few days at a time, or actually
living on board for the week? And do you need info on the various islands and
facilities?

Make sure you make a reservation for camping - space is limited and only
permitted on a few of the islands.

Unfortunately, camping is no longer permitted on three of my favorites - Great
Brewster ( the best view in the harbor), Outer Brewster (the most "rustic"), and
Calf. Also, Gallups is currently closed to visitors.

Sorry can't help too much with the ramps, one place I used in the past has
been off limits since 9/11/2001 because it's right next to a Bostongas
liquid natural gas tank and has been closed for security.

I checked the MDC site and these are listed (I would call for more info).

Launching Ramps
a.. Boston - Charles River - Daly Recreational Center, Nonantum Rd. in
Brighton/Newton
b.. Medford - Mystic River - Wellington Yacht Club
c.. Nahant - Nahant Beach - Harbor side
Link is here http://www.mass.gov/mdc/activ.htm#boat

As was mentioned there is a ramp in Winthrop, and I'm pretty sure in
Charlestown, but I don't know the details.

Just a thought, if you get bored of the harbor inslands and want to get a
bit further up the coast you could try heading up to the Salem area and grab
a mooring at the Misery Islands, nice place to hang out (although you can't
camp on the island) and perhaps even swing into Salem harbor for a look at
the Peabody Essex Museum, House of Seven Gables, assorted Witchcraft related
stuff (a little tacky but really not too bad), all within walking distance
of the harbor docks. You can also check out Marblehead. If the winds
treating you right, it's a nice daysail, a few hours at most.

Good luck.
