Aren't there open racing classes, where men and women can compete
together? If so, why not?

There's always the Isle of Man TT races, where women compete:

TT newcomer and Supersport racer, England’s Jenny Tinmouth now owns the
fastest women’s lap record for the Isle of Man at an average speed of
116.483 mph (187 km/h) on her Honda Fireblade. The previous record was
held by the phenomenal Maria Costello, who in 2004 became the fastest
women on the Isle of Man with an average speed of just over 114 mph (183
km/h).

British Supersport rider Jenny Tinmouth is the latest in a long line of
talented young riders who raced and made their débuts at 2009 Isle of
Man TT Races.

Jenny, 30-years of age works is a motorcycle mechanic by trade and works
for “Two Wheel Workshop”. She’s already got the reputation for being the
fastest female rider in the UK—the Isle of Man is now part of her
accomplishments as well as being the first woman to compete in the TT’s
solo classes since France's Fabienne Migout rode in the Supersport and
Production 600cc races in 2004.

Tinmouth comes from England’s North, Ellesmere Port, Cheshire and
started racing in 2000 in the 125cc class. She soon progressed to
Britain’s MRO (Motorcycle Racing Organisation) Championship and by 2003
was a regular in the 125cc British Championship grabbing her first
points in 2004 at Mallory Park. That year also saw her become the first
female rider to lead a British Championship solo race, however briefly
during Brands Hatch round. When Maria Costello heard of Jenny’s new
record she was very complimentary yet also expressed that she intends a
comeback on her Kawasaki ZX6.
