I didn't escape the draft. Like most young men back then, I wasn't
drafted.
And I wasn't so dumb that I would enlist to fight the people of
Vietnam or
for that corrupt regime in Saigon.

I know you were too smart to get drafted, enlist, or have anything to
do with the military except
work for that general in Vietnam.

I wasn't "too smart" to get drafted, Herring. I simply wasn't drafted.
Most young men my age were not drafted. You knew that, right? There was
no reason to enlist; I didn't believe the bull**** about Vietnam, and I
had no reason to want to kill the people of Vietnam.

I spent a month as a reporter and then six months later, about six
months in Vietnam, but as a civilian employee of the Department of
Defense. My job had nothing to do with killing anyone for any reason.

I remember your story as John remembered it. Why are you changing it now?
