So, harry is a crook... I told you so.

Not for this, Unlocking a phone is different than just cracking into
the operating system and removing Apple's monopoly enforcer.

Jailbreaking a phone or, as you put it, "just cracking into
the operating system and removing Apple's monopoly enforcer," isn't
illegal, either, although your description of the process is a bit
"underdetailed," if you will. What jailbreaking does is open up a closed
OS.

That is what I was going for but I tried not to get too technical.

I don't have a smart phone and I don't carry a dumb phone most of the
time but my wife is an android wizard with a minor in "I" products.
We have a tech support rule here. If it fits in your purse or pocket
she handles it, if it is a desktop or lap top I do it. Friends, family
and neighbors keep us both busy. ;-)

Here's an example of what jailbreaking is all about. Apple's IOS for the
"i" devices favors its own web browser, Safari. I don't like it on my
desktop, so I don't use it. There's no penalty for using something else.
But, on the iPhone, Safari is pretty much hard-wired, and has access to
OS and hardware resources that are closed to other browsers that can be
used on the iPhone, such as the Nitro javascript engine. This makes
Safari "faster" than other browsers on the iPhone, as an example.

So, some smart fellow came up with app for jailbroken phones called
Nitrous. It provides a legal way for third party browsers, such as
Chrome or Atomic Browser, to access the Nitro javascript engine. Worth
every penny of the ninety-nine cents it cost.
