What weapon, why would any kid approach his dad like that in the first
place... I would assume the kid knew his dad had a firearm...

My money is on pliers or a crescent wrench. He probably tried to
scare his father away so he could run away, not considering the fact
that his father might actually shoot.

15 year olds aren't known for their brilliant decision making skills.
