This is a day when all Americans join together to remember the sacrifices of those who answered their nation's call. The significance of this day is sometimes confused or distorted. The true meaning of Memorial Day becomes at times, distant or vague, lost to commercialism, or drowned in forgetful indulgence. Sometimes, there is a failure to recognize the magnitude of the deeds of the men and women who held true to the notion that evil and tyranny must not prevail. Nationally, it seems a sacred duty to keep the legacy of our nation's patriots forever fresh in the memories of future generations. We are bound by honor to do so. They fought and died to preserve this land of hopes and dreams. Without the courage, valor and singleness of purpose of our nation's veterans, the values that have always made it possible for us to meet new challenges, and move forward as a nation, would have been lost. The freedoms that so many Americans enjoy did not come cheaply. They were paid for with the flesh and blood of American servicemen and women, and with the tears of those whose lives were changed forever by the loss of a loved one. Memorial Day is a day of opportunity to give thanks for all that we are blessed with. It should also be a day that we rededicate ourselves to our country and to America's living veterans and their families in memory of the sacrifices they, and others have made.. Veterans will gather to honor fallen comrades on this day. Their time together may have been brief, but the bonds were deeply formed. Life and feelings are intensified when there is sharing of hardship and laughter; fear and loss. It is a responsibility with which we all are charged -- to do our best to repay the debt that is owed to those who have presented us with our most precious gift ... freedom.” (Jesse Brown Secretary of Veterans Affairs) Thanks Tim.. I was reading it though and imagined you might have written it, I think it would have made a good Sunday service lesson ![]() Scotty- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - I did Scott. Here's the rest of my contribution: Today…. we mourn the brave souls who laid their lives down for our freedom. We pray that they have found peace with God, and we resolve that their sacrifices will always be remembered by this grateful nation. But most importantly, let us remember the ultimate sacrifice made for all mankind by the death of Jesus Christ. It is by His death that we are all forgiven; and it is through our faith in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, that we find hope in a new life. May God bless our troops and their families, and may God Bless America. "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." (John 15:13) |

We just got back last night and to tired to head for the lake today. Thursday evening before we left I went to three local cemeteries, and decorated 13 of my family mostly divided between ww1 and ww2 vets, with one from the Spanish-American and one from the Civil War. Then Friday morning we headed for Kansas. It may be the last time I ever will go out to dress graves of my ancestors on my mom's side, Long and tiresome, but it was a great trip, just the same. Anyhow, I'm half way feeling back to normal again, so it's time to get ready for the huge cookout. And before that, I might go do some work on the 23' Marquis. decisions, decisions.... Anyway, enjoy the day . Sounds like a lot of family history to be proud of Tim. Good of you to honor those soldiers.- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - Thanks. I have several family artifacts fro battles and conflicts from the past. And I make sure that they're graves are decorated on each Memorial Day. No brag on my part, but this year I also went around to a lot of other local grave sites and layed out 64 flags. And that didn't cover them all. Next year I'll probably set 0ut a hundred or more. Somebody needs to do it. Very cool, Tim! I'll donate next year. Hit me up ahead of time. |

I can and don't mind handling the load my self. The guys at the American Legion were kind of surprised to find that the cemetaries had honors put out before they did. We have a small local A.L. post, and they put out about a hundred flags themselves and it doesn't cover near the amount needed. I talked with the Commander this morning, and he said the smaller cemetaries were really impressive to look at and they wer wondering who put the flags out. I told him I did and had plans to do more for next year. It's really not that much of a cost and I didn't mind it at all. He, on behalf of the local post were grateful. They've already pulled the flags for mowing etc, but they were willing to sort mine from theirs and return them to me. I said to keep them for future use, but that's the problem. They store them in a musty old legion hall where even new flags get moldy.though not a member of the Legion, I said I had a nice dry place to keep them if they wished me to store them. They may take me up on my offer, and I'd feel honored if they did. But all in all guys, again I appreciate the offers, but it may be more of a benefit if you made a donation for a flag fund with your local Americal Legion or VFW. |

"...The act of remembrance was for the estimated 188 American soldiers who died as prisoners of the British army in the War of 1812, and were buried on Deadman's Island. An informal ceremony has been held every Memorial Day since 2005 when the municipality bought the land and turned it into a park to prevent condominium development on the site....When developers were about to put condominiums on the land, the issue that it was an unmarked burial ground was raised." I didn't know of that. Thanks Don! |
