Only in Virginia eh?
It does remind me of when I lived out in the suburbs in a Cape Cod I built
with my own hands.
The lots were fairly long but only 80 feet wide.
I had seen a rat at the bird/squirrel feeder in the back yard so I decided
to blast it with my 22 cal semi-auto rifle from the 2nd story bathroom
window.
Didn't notice until after I plugged the vermin a couple of times that the
neighbours were out in the backyard two houses over.
I imagine I shocked them...lucky they didn't call the Mounties.

Keep the muzzle of the gun as far back from the opened as little as
possible window as you can. This will cut the noise of a 22 to near
nothing outside the room. If you rest the gun on the right rung of a
step ladder the right distance from the window, you only have to open
it an inch or two. As for urban pheasants, you zero in on a pile of
cracked corn. When the bird shows up, step up to the bench rest and
pop him in the skull. The favorite round for poaching deer is the 22.
As usual, I deny everything.

What do you think the reference to Mounties meant?

He does not hold himself to the same standard as he does others.
Imagine if it had been someone else, he would have ratted them out in
a heartbeat... I bet he is a great neighbor snerk.

If you, Herring, and FloridaJim got together and merged your brains, you
might - maybe - break into a three digit IQ.

I have not seen a mouse or rat in the yard itself since we moved in
here...and my wife has more bird feeders out than a bird feeder factory.
I suspect the friendly critters - the foxes, raccoons, possums, and
small bears*, along with the large birds of prey, have taken care of them..

Oh, ****, you make it sound like you live way outside of civilization.
I know where you live, dumbass, have been in the area many times, as
I've got friends in the area.

If by that you mean the squirrels got into the baits, I suggest either
an air rifle, selective that, or a bait container with a rat sized
hole that is too small for the squirrels. Unless you consider them
vermin, of course. Thing about poisons is that mice die in the walls
and you have a million flies.

Another thing, the poison they use is coumerin, AKA warfarin, and is
found in the supermarket under the name of D-Con. They sell the
prepared baits for probably a tenth what the exterminator cost.
If you want to pay through the nose, you could buy laser grade
coumerin.

Crikey...what's wrong with a few squirrels running around?

Rats? If they were in Herring's yard, they found their home.

The bait stations were accessible to the squirrels, but that was fine.
We had too damn many squirrels anyway.

It's not likely you would get away with shooting a gun at your
landlady's house either.

In Iowa it is illegal to shoot within 500 feet of a building.
Anywhere. A rule widely ignored by hunters. I use the smallest shot
feasible in part to decrease danger distance. Small shot has less
range but I can't hit birds that are far away.

Show me any town, anywhere in North America where zoning lets anybody
with 80 foot wide lots, shoot up the neighborhood... He is obviously
an idiot and has no business owning any guns... Just like you.

About the only advice you can provide is how to bounce down the stairs at
the local cop shop.

Snerk... Essex has its own stairwell test dummy.
