I have not been following the thread but this post had me thinking about our partner in Florida. He grew up here in CT until he was in his 20's and he is now in his 40's and still complains about the bread in Florida. Every time he visits he wants "CT" bread made with local water, says he can tell the difference and hates his local bread. He swears he can tell the difference in the beer too. Drinks one mainstream brand down there, a competetors brew up here. (Both cheap American beer). |

The gyros here in Florida, especially Tarpon Springs, are the OK. The pizza, it sucks, big time. About the only thing I miss from Chicago is the pizza from a mom and pop restaurant.- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - I don't like Chicago deep dish pizza, it ain't pizza, it's a cassarole! Thin crust, brick oven, NY style! Best pizzas I have ever had were in Naples, Italy. They rolled the dough out, put on the sauce and fixings, saturated the top with olive oil then stuck it in a big, brick oven with a wood fire in the back. They were cooked for about 45 secs, pulled out, folded in half and served with the oil dripping out all over the place. Eisboch |

Florida has much to offer, but the quality of the water isn't one of them. Eisboch When you say "quality," are you referring to perceived taste or contaminates or both? We had municipal water in NE Florida and I don't recall it tasting funky. It probably varies from local to local. The area we were in had private, shallow wells and the water had a lot of sulfur and iron. Everyone's well was equipped with an elaborate water conditioning system to remove the iron and the sulfur stink. Even though we had a new, undated system installed when we bought the house, we still used bottled water for drinking and cooking. Couldn't get used to it. Eisboch Florida does seem to try to get away with minimalism. Our water pipe from the city came from under the street and curb and was buried less than 6" deep from the curb to where it entered the house. At some point, the pipe from the main going under the curb and sidewalk broke, and a month later we got a water bill for about a gazillion dollars. I whine, moaned, bitched and finally got the water company to investigate. It couldn't determine the cause of the break, so wanted to stick me with the repair, too. I actually had to go to a hearing to present my case, but I did win. The break could have been caused by a heavy truck driving on the shoulder too close to the curb, or any other reason that stressed the pipe. We had shallow wells for lawn irrigation, but I'm told that practice has been curtailed in many areas. |

We had a significant number of Portuguese families in New Haven when I lived there, but most seemed to come for the manufacturing jobs the area had at that time. Ever listen to the Portuguese language? It's really pretty. Nelly Furtado has songs out in Portuguese, btw. |

Eisboch Well, it depends where. Where I lived the water was excellent. Came right out of the Florida Aquafer. There's a town outside of Tampa called Crystal Springs, and the aquafer comes out the the ground there, 72 degrees, and clear as can be. There's a local water company, Zephyrhills water, that used to be privately owned but is now part of Perrier. |
