No question. Florida has much to offer, but the quality of the water
isn't one of them.

When you say "quality," are you referring to perceived taste or
contaminates or both? We had municipal water in NE Florida and I don't
recall it tasting funky.

It probably varies from local to local. The area we were in had
private, shallow wells and the water had a lot of sulfur and iron.
Everyone's well was equipped with an elaborate water conditioning system
to remove the iron and the sulfur stink. Even though we had a new,
undated system installed when we bought the house, we still used bottled
water for drinking and cooking. Couldn't get used to it.

Florida does seem to try to get away with minimalism. Our water pipe
from the city came from under the street and curb and was buried less
than 6" deep from the curb to where it entered the house. At some point,
the pipe from the main going under the curb and sidewalk broke, and a
month later we got a water bill for about a gazillion dollars. I whine,
moaned, bitched and finally got the water company to investigate. It
couldn't determine the cause of the break, so wanted to stick me with
the repair, too.

I actually had to go to a hearing to present my case, but I did win. The
break could have been caused by a heavy truck driving on the shoulder
too close to the curb, or any other reason that stressed the pipe.

We had shallow wells for lawn irrigation, but I'm told that practice has
been curtailed in many areas.
