It's easy to test with a laptop and a serial cable. Start a terminal program, set it to 4800 baud, 8 databits, 1 stopbit, no parity, no flow control. Now you can tap in on every NMEA signal. Let the laptop run on it's battery and you don't need galvanic isolation for this test. Pin 5 on the 9-pin connector is ground, pin 2 is the input to the laptop. Always connect ground first....
