Default Loran on the great lakes

Buying a boat (1988) after a 5 year hiatis. It's pretty thin on
electronics but
figure I'll have to replace the loran with GPS anyway and the rest
including engines (crusader 350's) are real good.

Anybody think Loran is still adquate for sunny day cruising or what
comments can you help with.

Why on a sunny day would you need anything but your eyeballs for
cruising? I've crossed Lake Michigan many times and cruised many
sunny days with only a compass.

Your right but, for those sunny days that start out that way and
deteriorate into 1/2 mile in haze. This always happens to me when I'm
fishing and not looking west.

Ah, yes, been there, done that, got the tee shirt. I had an awareness
of where I am, keep an eye on the compass and depth sounder, and listen
for the fog horn at the harbor inlet.

I've had a Furuno Loran on Lake Mich since '86. Still works great. It'll
surely get you back to your harbor when the weather turns ****ty after that
nice sunny morning for years to come. I don't believe there's a date
scheduled to turn Loran off yet.

That being said, a simple handlheld GPS is really inexpensive these days.
GPS repeatable accuracy is proably just as good as Loran these days with SA
off and WAAS.

If the LORAN still works and you are on a tight budget - keep it and
use it until it breaks. Then you can spend under $200 to get a GPS
with WAAS. If it ain't broke why (pay to) fix it? I've heard folks
say that LORAN is actually better in terms of "repeatability" - that
is returning to a waypoint that you previously established.

USCG hasn't announced a shut off date that I have seen - just that
they will provide "plenty of notice" before they do. Meanwhile, GPS
prices go down and the features expand.
