Looks like maybe he's heading for Ocean City inlet? How about Tom's Cove? I don't have a detailed chart, is it deep enough there? Belay that, just downloaded the chart, no where near enough water in there! Ocean City doesn't look to good either! Where the hell is he going? Cheers Marty |

Why backtrack? If he wanted to get to shore when he first changed course, Chesapeake Bay would have been the logical choice. Wilbur Hubbard |

Wilbur Hubbard Skip often makes unusual meandering course changes that make little sense to onlookers. It's even possible that he is just killing time until morning, because it would have been dark by the time he reached the Chesapeake Bay and he doesn't want to attempt it at night. |

If there were westerly winds you might be right but it appears there are NW winds so he must be motoring on his present course. http://www.octhebeach.com/info/ocean...ture-wind.html Wilbur Hubbard |

Wilbur Hubbard Skip often makes unusual meandering course changes that make little sense to onlookers. It's even possible that he is just killing time until morning, because it would have been dark by the time he reached the Chesapeake Bay and he doesn't want to attempt it at night. He was far enough offshore that, with the 15knot NW wind forecast in that area, he could have beat straight into Chesapeake bay at about 5-6 knots and would not have arrived there until by about mid-morning. He doesn't need to kill time by going NW. Besides, he made no mention of a stop in Chesapeake Bay in his float plan. . .. "We're going from Sandy Hook, NJ, to Miami, preferably in one jump. Barring last minute warnings against it, we're leaving Wednesday Oct. 1, PM. "Based on the recommendations from Chris Parker, our weather consultant, for favorable winds and seas, we'll go on a rhumb line, the outward curve through Barnegat Bay excepted, from Sandy Hook NJ to Cape Hatteras, the first large jump being about 330 miles. We'll avoid, as much as possible any adverse current as seen on these two sites: https://oceanography.navy.mil/legacy...c.pl/metoc/223... and /32, plus http://rads.tudelft.nl/gulfstream/, as our course will take us close to the Gulf Stream edge." According to those current maps, if the current was closer inshore than shown he perhaps is reducing his offing so to avoid the adverse current. Wilbur Hubbard Wilbur Hubbard |

I clicked on my original and brought up their current path. Nope. Just a blank page with SPOT logo. The SPOT site isn't very helpful. Looks to me like Skippy might be giving up and heading to port. Position 48, 49, and 50 shows a turn toward Cape Charles. But, he can't make it before nightfall so I hope he's familiar with the entrance to Chesapeake Bay. Perhaps he's shooting for a morning arrival. Wilbur Hubbard Looks to me like they've been close-hauled in a southerly breeze, got headed about 1 PM, tacked about 3 across a foul current, tacking back about 7 on a course that'll let them skim the Outer Banks or get a better line on the Bay. That 4-hour backtracking leg surprises me, but might have gotten them out of the current as their tack at 7 gave them a better than 90 degree leg -- and FP isn't that close-winded. The near-shore forecast at the moment http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/data/Forecasts/FZUS51.KAKQ.html is showing S winds going NE late with lingering SE swells, which supports at least part of what I surmised. -- Jere Lull Xan-à-Deux -- Tanzer 28 #4 out of Tolchester, MD Xan's pages: http://web.mac.com/jerelull/iWeb/Xan/ Our BVI trips & tips: http://homepage.mac.com/jerelull/BVI/ |

I don't know what has happened, suddenly my spot page will not load properly, no map, just a list of points and I can't get them to give me position.
