From Toronto - down St. Lawrence river
Good day to all;
In two weeks Im planning to go from Toronto downstream St. Lawrence River. I do not have any destination all what I have is three weeks off from work, 40 sailboat, and my two hands. I like to ask you for suggestion, advice any pro and cons; where to stop, what must to see, what afraid of anything what will help me to make this trip as simple and nice as possible. My plan is sail down and leave the boat somewhere for winter to continue exploration next year. Thanks in advance. (Mr.) Mada |

My draft is only 4' (Mr) Mada On Jul 18, 2:21*pm, Ryk wrote: On Fri, 18 Jul 2008 09:14:02 -0700 (PDT), in message There's a limited number of stops on the north shore of Lake Ontario, especially if 40 feet means 6 foot plus draft. I have been gently and retrievably aground at Pickering, Port Darlington, and Newcastle. Port Hope and Coburg are both nice and deep, but none of these are must see destinations. Consider the inside route through the Murray Canal (just re-opened I hear, so check in advance) into the Bay of Quinte. Be sure to stop at the Prince Edward YC in Picton, then stop in Kingston for all the tourist stuff. The Thousand Islands are great and well described in the Ports guide, then there is a lot of boring river on the way to Montreal. On the south east shore you should hit Sodus Bay, Henderson, and especially Sackett's Harbour. Cheers, Rick |

Remember those BIG Boys, can't STOP or Turn, near as fast as you can, so it is important that you stay out of their way. It is really rare here for fog to be an issue, so visual should be adequate. IME there is lots of space to run to if you are watching them, unless you draw 20 ft. They behave very predictably in the river. We race around them. In the lakes there is a lot more room and they can surprise you by altering to avoid you. My major peeve on the lakes is about big boats with so much white deck light that you can't read the nav lights to tell which way they are going. If I could add one thing to the COLREGS as practiced, it would be something about nav lights being bright enough to be seen clearly over deck lights. Boats may need to do ops at night. They should either stop or display enough light to show where they are going. Ryk |

Or, they could learn to see in somewhat reduced light. It needn't be
streetlamp bright, just a few leds could provide adequate deck working light for eyes accustomed to the twilight. Terry K |

There can be good safety reasons to make a deck streetlamp bright if you can. I just wish they would brighten the nav lights to match. Ryk |
