buying a foreign boat
wrote in message ... On Thu, 11 Oct 2007 14:55:02 +1100, "JohnM" Sorry, I misunderstood. In your case I suspect that the easiest way is to buy the cheapest ticket out of the V.I. and if you find the boat chuck the ticket. Bruce in Bangkok (brucepaigeATgmailDOTcom) Thanks Bruce I hope you're right, I've never done this before. I didn't know how strictly they apply the rules. |

I can't comment on the V.I. but, depending on your passport, if you fly into Singapore or Thailand without an onward ticket they will make you buy a ticket from an airline representative in the airport which will be, of course, be higher priced then if bought from a travel agent. "Gogarty" wrote in message ... If you can possibly avoid it, stay out of the US altogether. Other countries have transit facilities at their airportts that allow you to pass into and out of the airport while enroute to someplace else without going through customs and immigration. Not the US. No matter what your final destination, if you transit the US you must go through Customs and Immigration. That is to be avoided at all costs if you can. Yes I suspected that and plan B was to fly via Mexico City but the only flights I could find go on to transit Miami so I'd be in the same situation. |

Again, I can't comment on the V.I. but I have never been asked anything other then "do you have an onward ticket?" I'd check that one again. Is there a V.I. Tourist Board or other like organization you can contact? Bruce in Bangkok (brucepaigeATgmailDOTcom) |

Nearly all countries have special regulations for ship's crews, usually a limited visa stay as long as they depart on the ship. Bruce in Bangkok (brucepaigeATgmailDOTcom) Thanks for your answer Bruce. Perhaps I didn't explain too well. I will only be transiting the US by air on the way to BVI. I probably won't enter US waters after I exit BVI. So the US part doesn't seem to be a concern. I see a potential problem when I fly into BVI without an ongoing or return ticket and not yet a boat to depart on. Have done this earlyer this year...... there was no problem tho as i had paid a deposit on the boat and had papers to show this...my deal fell through though due to some communication problems and things not being as told..(honest mistake) be warned phone service there is lousey. it boils down to what citizen are you more than anything. and by the way a 168 dollar ticket out to st martin is a ticket out even if you dont use it it qualifys as a transient tourist and you should get a three month stamp as u arrive. mine cost me 12000 to come home without a boat...not happy as i lugged tools and spares over fully expecting to purchase the boat. marine part are VERY expensive there. shaun |
