Going to Marthas Vineyard!!!
I would like to spend a weekend at Marthas Vineyard. Has anyone gone there
before? Where can I get a transient slip or a mooring. What day of the week is best to go? Where is it best to go? I'll be going from Hewitts Cove in Hingham, MA . My boat is a Searay 310 34' overall Thanks In Advance, Frank |

Going to Marthas Vineyard!!!
there are moorings in all the Harbors. Edgartown moorings are expensive
but Edgartown is a nice place. Most of the slips seem to be in Oak Bluffs. But there are slips in Menemsha, Vineyard Haven and Edgartown. Be prepared for high prices. Look up Marinas in Eldridge, various cruising guides, try phoning the harbormasters, by phone, or check websites, to get marina names and phones. Menemsha is a tiny, 15-minute-walk-around-time village. Very charming but small. Great womens'sporty clothing store-Pandora's Box. I prefer Vineyard Haven for moorings and ambience but its your vacation so go have fun and learn for yourself. Check your currents and tidecharts. {Yeah, I know you have the power to buck any current, but know what they are doing. It may make for an easier ride.} An elegant harbor for a lunch stop would be Hadley's Harbor opposite Woods Hole. Another place for a stop would be Tarpaulin Cove. good luck and have fun. ps-in Vineyard Haven there is a great bookstore---GRAPES of WRATH BOOKSTORE. down the street from a good icecream store. Going to Marthas Vineyard!!!
All the VH restaurants are BYOB, AFAIK. Black Dog certainly.
The inner harbor moorings fill up fast in VH. If you can't get one, you are mooring outside the breakwater. This is untenable in a north east blow, so choose your weather. With a fast boat, you could peak in at mid morning, and if no mooring inside, go somewhere else. You can reserve moorings in Edgartown (at least could last year). -- Marc Auslander 914 945-4346 (Tieline 862 Fax x4425) |

Don't let them razz you. MV is wonderful, IMHO. We spend a week
their every year, usually moored inside in Vineyard Haven. -- Marc Auslander 914 945-4346 (Tieline 862 Fax x4425) |

I was headed for the Vineyard that day - I decided to hang out at Hadley's instead. So did a few other people: Now that you mentioned it, Jeff, I recall that on that day I was on a leg from the Cape Cod Canal to Provincetown, enroute to Yarmouth NS. I remember that day distinctly, not in the same was I remember Nov 22, 1963, but because VHF 13 was filled with USCG traffic about the incident. As I recall, they did not give details of exactly what had happened, but only that a restricted area of such-and-such coordinates had been established and traffic there was controlled. It was only later that we learned of the accident. -- Good luck and good sailing. s/v Kerry Deare of Barnegat http://kerrydeare.tripod.com |

Going to Marthas Vineyard!!!
There are four harbors at the Vineyard we go there all the time.
From East to west: Edgartown - Very very colonial somewhat artsy. large well protected inner harbor interesting looking colonial seaport - mostly moorings there are a number of town transient moorings 25 BLUE town moorings around the Green Can #9 are on a first-come-first-serve basis... if there's an empty one, grab it ! there are another 50 or more YELLOW town moorings about 3/4 of a mile past Green can #9 these YELLOW moorings can be and usually are reserved. Best time to pick up a mooring 10- 11:00 AM. Very hard on Fridays and Saturdays. If worst comes to worst go into Katama Bay and drop the hook.for more info on E-town see Note dingy space is totally inadequate but there is launch service even into Katama Bay http://www.impulz.net/buzzardsbay/dest/edgartwn.htm hint don't even try on Race Week) Oak Bluffs is the liveliest harbor small tight and very well protected except from a NE wind, lots of from ferries day trippers from Hyannis, Providence Woods Hole. . . . famous for its Methodist campground and the brightly-painted Victorian "gingerbread" cottages. The Tabernacle has traditional American (for the 19th century) entertainment Weds evening (brass bands, choruses and such)... and the home of the Flying Horses Carousel, the oldest working carousel in America. Lots of slips Slips... $ 2.50/ft (30 ft minimum) and $ 5.00/electric reserve ahead Lots of moorings, no real problem getting one (except on Sat) because rafting not just encouraged its often involuntary, (you do meet interesting people) http://www.impulz.net/buzzardsbay/dest/oakbluff.htm hint the fire works weekend mid august is very crowded. seems to be launch service Launch service Vineyard Haven Busiest harbor somewhat industrial but a really good restraint in easy walking distance (Black Dog) , good place to stock up on stuff A&P (remember them) is 100 ft from the dingy dock. Lots of moorings the most desirable are in the inner harbor (behind the breakwater) There are 40 town moorings and another 14 transient boats can be accommodated at the Owens Park town dock (no electric). Other moorings or dock space are available at the Vineyard Haven Marina (693-0720) on Beach Road. http://www.mvproperties.com/html/vineyardhaven.htm good protection except from NE Launch service Menemsha Most remote, a little Mainey looking, caters to fisher folks (sport and pros). Good fish store, good fish restraint in easy walking distance (Home Port), Very well protected limited slips limited moorings (sailboats only), If the weathers good and wind is from the south you can moor or anchor in the bight outside the harbor. Hint very powerful current (particularly on an ebb tide) in channel makes getting into slips tricky, super clear water, great sunsets, no Launch service http://www.impulz.net/buzzardsbay/dest/menemsha.htm Note - free pump out in almost all Mass Ports and definitely on MV Hope this helps "SASIINC" wrote in message ...
