Well, I'm going sailing... :-)

A dirty sock is more likely to hold grit that will damage your topsides than
a fender without a sock.
I clean mine every winter, or as necessary, with proprietory fender cleaner
which keeps them looking good.
Covering up dirt is not the way to go.
