I was asked to build a dock on lake front property. Does the dock have
to float or can I build it like I would a deck? Please help. The dock would run 20 out into the water and would be about 2 feet deep at it's deepest point. -- Chris F Long Island, USA. Fisherman by nature, goofball by society. |

With an addie like that, the thought arises to tell you to build it short, and take a long run off it... But I won't. Steve "Francophile" |

More on Watts's theme: If the water level varies by less than 3 ft over a 20 year period, you might well choose a fixed jetty on driven piers. If more, then box in a foam-plastic dock on sliding piers to keep up with the water level. Brian W |

Chris: No building advice for you, but get hold of "The Dock Manual" by Max Burns. It is published by Storey Books, North Adams, Mass. Lots of good information and illustrations in there that will answer a lot of your questions. Well worth the $25. There are plans for stationary and floating docks, with material lists etc. Best of luck Storey Books 210 MASS MoCA Way North Adams Mass 01247 Fone# 1.800.441.5700 www.storey.com Kevin no connection with Storey, but a happy user of the manual |

Look at the other docks on the lake and see how they're built. If it's a lake,
not a flowage, then most likely the levels are pretty stable. If it has to be taken out in winter, around Wisconsin a lot of them are deck sections on steel posts that can be adjusted easily. Good luck. Gordon Bullis landlocked owner of an aluminum tub |
