marine stereos
Are marine CD stereos car stereos in water resistant enclosures or are
the boards and controls sealed. Are marine stereo speakers high quality car speakers with rubber surounds and plastic cones, or are they different and how. |

I guess the answer is yes and no. At least I have seen "marine" CD and
loadspeakers" that are not protected for water, and I have seen some that at least look sealed. I have seen loadspeakers being seld in two versions, one has been treated with something so the cone won't absorb water. I do not think there are any general rules, you have to look at each case. Maybe there are some certifications, I do not know. I have permanently removed my outdoor speakers in case of heavy weather or capsize (I suppose they would have ended up as big holes in the deck). I've got three years so far out of a very cheap ( nothing cheaper than free
.... ) paper cone speaker that has got a lot of splash and drip - mostly rainwater. I mounted it in a well painted box, cone down, and gave it several coats of silicone based water repelling spray - left over from waterproofing some clothing. When it fails I will decide if I "buy" another one or go for the real thing. This is NOT above the deck or where failure would be more than an inconvenience. DF "Haakon Dybdahl" wrote in message ... I have had several marine stereo,s tape and CD and the unit I have now
(broken, again) is a Jensen CD player, west marine has replaced it on warranty twice making this the third. My unit is mounted in an instrument box (with door) under my tee top, no spray hits it, but it's downfall is just living outdoors. It seems the delicate micro circuits can't stand the humidity we have in the south. My next move will be either a cheaper car unit that I can remove and store indoors when not in use or maybe try a Clarion which people tell me is up living outdoors. So, to answer your question, I don't know, but when a "marine" stereo player fails from just humidity you have to wonder if there is any meaningful diference other than maybe some clear spray sealer applied over a few parts? I hope somebody weights in on this with a good recomendation on the player, the posters on speakers made some good points on safety issues. -- Ron White My boatbuilding website is: www.concentric.net/~knotreel |

It seems Clarion has a sealed board , but there are so many other
components that cant be sealed that long life is impossible, and unrealistic. Speakers are mechanical and deteriorate at a % per hr of use or exposure . Ex. 20 yr old Ampeg 8 x 10" are 75 % less efficent than new when compared to a new 2 x 10 for SPL at 1 watt @ 1 mete Point is speakers lose Effenciency and Frequency response after break in period . So you also have a replacment date with speakers, They WEAR out as does anything else . Marine - C |
