Default 1972 Johnson 20 HP - Can't Find A Prop

I have ordered a new prop (Michigan Propeller) from Overtons as per
their listing in the catalog. When I got it, I found that the mounting
configuration was different from what I have. The present prop mounts
onto a splined shaft. The new prop does not have any splines at all,
it would appear to use some type of shear pin. First thoughts might be
that I ordered the wrong prop, but a couple of years ago I went to a
Johnson dealer and ordered a new prop - same result. The parts guy at
the dealer said he had no other listing, and couldn't help me out. I
don't think he was the best parts guy around, but it is an old motor
and who knows what they ran back then. To make matters more confusing,
I did manage to buy a new prop several years earlier from a place that
wasn't really a franchised dealer, but I did get a prop (OMC supplied)
that fit. Of course, this hole in the wall dealer isn't there
anymore......
Here is what I think: At some point, Johnson changed their design,
probably mid year, and it would appear that I have a version of the
type that wasn't produced in large volumes. I am guessing that the
splined prop was superceded by the other type, and most of the parts
books reflect this. The retailer who did find me the correct prop
probably has an old parts listing.
Has anyone else run across this issue? I would like to hear from you.
I will try to get the old prop rebuilt, but I would like to know how
to order a new one just in case.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

They went to splined shaft with the through hub exh. All the earlier ones IIRC
should have the smooth shaft and rear shear pin. Someone may have changed out
the unit (that would be tough as it's totally different) or another part that
has the model # on it. I got a 55 10 horse johnson last month with a '69 stern
bracket (& model# ). See if the model & ser# agree with the one in the
freeze plug on the powerhead. BTW, I use Marine Wheels in Panama City FL for
my prop work, fast & reasonable (no affiliation) 850-763-2889 (Mike).
