I have a problem with paint on my rubrail. It was done in the past by the PO
with Easypoxy burgundy. Every time I was the boat the paint on the rubrail must start to dissolve a small bit. It makes it look like a washing with red paint. You would think after the rail had not been painted in a few yeras it would be all gone but its never ending. I usually add a small amount of bleach when doing the hull to get rid of any black spots and it is worse than using just soapy water alone but the problem still happens then. Next haulout I intend on stripping both and redoing with something better. Any suggestions why this happens and a solution? A better paint solution? Thanks for any help. Phil |

It sounds like a poor paint job, most likely poor preparation. I've used epoxy paint for years and if put on prepared surfaces never a problem. Water simply will not break it down. Rey |

Thanks for the reply,
Its not lifting off the surface, its almost as if its oxidizing like the 'dust' you get from old fiberglass only but red. I wish it was lifting off! I tried using a cleaner wax last time it was out and it was a never ending rag toss with red rubbing off. Hi phil. It sounds like a poor paint job, most likely poor preparation. Phil Easypoxy is a very good paint (not epoxy, by the way). The paint must have been applied incorrectly or the surface was contaminated. |

Pettit Easypoxy is an excellent product. However, if it is applied over an
epoxy covered surface, without using a primer, it may NEVER cure. When this happened to me I cleaned off the paint with mineral spirits (paint thinner) and a rag. It all just wiped off very easy. Then give the surface a light sanding and paint with Pettit Easypoxy #6149 White Undercoater. You may want to do two coats of the white undercoater, with a very light sanding between coats. Don't remove the undercoater, just smooth it down. After curing, usually less than 24 hours, follow with the Pettit Easypoxy paint in your favorite color. Allow it to cure between coats, which can be as long as four or five days in cool weather. This paint has great flow characteristics. For best results apply it with a short-nap roller and very lightly tip it off with a brush. (Foam or bristle) Good Luck Rusty O |

See the Pettit site. http://www.pettitpaint.com/pdf/easyproxy.pdf for the
manufacturer's instructions. Phil wrote: I have a problem with paint on my rubrail. It was done in the past by the PO with Easypoxy burgundy.
