I'm ignorant enough. I don't need to flaunt it on purpose in people's faces.... :-o~

Not sure anymore. If you paint over any tinted duck tape

it
will last at least 2 years without delaminating and

getting
little bits all over your boat/yard/driveway...

Did you learn that from Red Green?

I learned it from having an awkward angle on the cabin
corners on the Tahiti we never repaired. The paint
preserved the tape and plastic over the holes where the
bulwarks should have been.

Why do most newsreaders , including Microsoft's "Outlook Express" default to
top posting?

Somehow I presumed you were smarter than that. Guess initial impressions

insisted that bottom posting is rude and people would refuse to read
those..they insisted on top posting...(many of the yahoo groups top post...)

Interesting--I've never seen any of that nature. To the contrary, I've
contributed to some in which the regulars will killfile you for one
infraction of top posting.

You've asked politely, so I'll give you a straight answer.

I don't know why Outlook Express defaults to top-posting, but I can guess.
Most emails are top-posted, so one can assume that when OE was designed, it
followed the email convention since it is an email client as well. OE is a
very old email client / news reader--even MS has come up with better
software in the intervening years. And OE is probably the weakest, least
versatile news reader currently available. I use it because it's simple and
cheap--it came with my bundled software. If I were serious about Usenet I'd
probably invest in one of the better pieces of software, such as Eudora.

As for top-posting or bottom-posting, the old adage "when in Rome . . ."
applies in spades. It is frustrating, not to mention cumbersome, to have to
deal with top-posters when the majority of the regulars in a NG bottom-post.
If everyone top-posted, it would conversely be annoying to have someone
bottom-posting. Almost everyone here bottom-posts. Jon, you, and a few
others persist in top-posting, which makes for absolutely no continuity in
reading long threads *unless* the person who responded to your post cuts and
pastes your post to the bottom, as I did here.

There is no rule governing where you post, just common courtesy.

Personally, I'd consider a better newsreader, but if you must use OE,
try using QuoteFix.

You don't need an add-on program if you dare to mess with the Registry (XP):

1. Quit Outlook Express.
2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Locate and then click the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID for identity
involved}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0
4. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
5. Type Reply At End, and then press ENTER.
6. Right-click Reply At End, and then click Modify.
7. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.

To reset it to default at the top, change the value back to zero.

Most do not. Only one that I am aware of does.

The reason is that it was designed by people ignorant of 30 years of
usenet conventions.

Fortunately, you can change the configuration and never be accused of
being a "top-posting ****wit" again. (not my words, btw)

Great idea. I also like the minimum sailing weight rule which includes
the crew. Clearly, a boat on these proportions is going to be very
sensitive to crew weight.

I guess I wasn't clear: actually, they have the competitor stand on the
scale twice, once while holding the boat, once without, and then take
the difference. It's the easiest way to weigh the boat.

I don't think there's an all-up minimum weight, including crew.
