Guess you've never been in the audience at one of these shows. There are
prompts. Letterman's NYC audience also finds Cheney ludicrous. They don't
need
prompts.

You make my point rather well. Totally Pavlovian responses entirely
divorced
from the substance of the line.

Charlie (BB) Morgan salivates at the sound of a bell . . . er, rather at the
mention of Cheney being derided by a comic.

Well, Cheney is a funny guy, especially with a shotgun or a war.

Must be Nancy Pelosi.

Ever notice how Leno's monologue relies very heavily on the audience's
Pavlovian response to certain words? For example, regardless of what
Leno's
line is, funny or not funny, the mention of Dick Cheney at any point in
the
monologue automatically triggers a laugh response from the Hollywood based
audience.

I think that after Nancy Pelosi's antics of last week, she's destined for
that kind of a response as well.

I'd say that of the colonial powers, the British had about
the best (and most consistent, more to their credit)record
of building infrastructure, encouraging local economic
autonomy & development, and leaving the least mess behind
them. Certainly better than say Belgium.

Thanks-I think... :-)

big snip

It isn't the fault of Great Britain.

Agreed. None of the colonial powers ever seriously undertook
to build a stable & sef-sustaining social & economic
infrastructure to leave behind. And how can you blame them,
when that wasn't even close to what they were there for in
the first place?

Remember that Canada, Australia, New Zealand and India were once British
Colonies.

Well, they may well have grounds to feel that they are now ethnic minorities
in countries where there ancestors once had full possession, but they are
not starving to death in their thousands or killing each other in their
thousands like the Africans. Nor are their governments totally corrupt, nor
do they have to see their leaders feathering their own nests and riding
around in luxury while they starve, like the Africans.

He's simply expecting to elicit the usual Pavlovian response, Max.

And he successfully got it from both you and Jeff.
