Default Deck Stepped Mast Electrical Solutions

Well, I survived my trip from Sydney, N.S. to St. Pierre, and back.

My mast wiring did not. Somehow I managed to pinch it and ruin the
wires. Just as well, they were 20+ years old and could use redoing, and
I'll add an Aqua Signal tri-color and strobe while I'm at it. Also, I
want to run a dedicated ground to each light, no shared ground returns.

However, I need a better way to connect my wires so I don't bonehead it
once again and mess up the new installation.

Does anyone have a good reference and/or site for a deck stepped mast
wiring interface? I will have about 12 wires (+/-) and a steel hull &
deck house. I have a LeFiell aluminum mast.

I'm thinking that I would like to have a terminal box on the mast, or
one I could tuck inside the mast. Then I would have a relatively short
cable assembly into the cabin where I have an existing terminal block.
Then I would disconnect/reconnect the wires at the mast base.

Also, recommendations on type of wire would be appreciated.

Many thanks,

Howard

Here's an untried suggestion. It does at least seem like a practical
way to reduce pinches.

A mass-market exists for 6 way trailer connectors. One type is a
coiled connector like the phones used to have. This stops the
connector pulling out or pinching. It's meant to be out in the
weather. Two of these might suit your purposde.

Brian and Jere,

Thanks for the replies. Your experience has been mine. The wire got
pinched because there was no one below to pull out all of the slack.
Setting the mast is an anxiety ridden experience in itself (my 5/8" rope
choker parted amongst other things) so it is sure to happen once again.

The trailer connectors sound like a decent approach. I will look for them.

Many thanks,

Howard

We use a gin pole and a mainsheet type setup to step the mast on our
28' Irwin which we trailer sail. I'm using a milatary style waterproof
canon plug which I obtained from this source

Do you have any photos up on the internet showing how you handle
stepping and unstepping your mast? I have a similarly sized boat and
am very interested in how you handle it. Thanks.
