Can't believe these folks were out Friday night with kids on board in
the cold. The kicker is that these rocks are lighted! |

is that White Rocks?
I like the guys comment about sailboats don't usually travel at night because they need to be under sail to move. Scotty "Ringmaster" wrote in message oups.com.. .. Can't believe these folks were out Friday night with kids on board in the cold. The kicker is that these rocks are lighted! |

I'm with you there Oz, it's a sickening feeling watching your boat grind on rocks, been there, don't want the t-shirt. Cheers Marty |

I welcome you to crackerbox palace, We've been expecting you. I live 10 miles from the Atlantic on the East Coast..I know what the conditions were like on Friday. samll craft advisories were up...and they took their kids out in that? The CH also had to rescue a guy whi was board sailing...his mast broke and he ended up offshore...and no...I don't make those kinds of mistakes. Especially with kids aboard. |

Should have rescued the kids and left the parents on the rock...

OTOH there are mistakes anybody could make, then there are mistakes one makes only if careless or stupid. Taking kids out in bad weather (predicted to get worse, and cold to boot) is something that only skilled sailors should do... except they probably wouldn't. Hitting rocks at night, even if lit, is an easier mistake to make. I got the impression the people waited helplessly for rescue, also not something a skilled sailor would be likely to do. "Learn from the mistakes of others, you can't possibly live long enough to make all of them yourself." -wise old saying. DSK |

True enough, it'd be nice to get the whole story, like why they were out there. There might be some good reason for it, although I can't think of one right now. I'm not familiar with the area, maybe they thought that since they were inland the weather wasn't going to be so bad? (But why in hell would anyone want to go night sailing on a cold November night in an area you weren't familiar with?) is that White Rocks? Yes, that's what it looks like. The channel is about a mile wide there, but we don't know where they were headed. I like the guys comment about sailboats don't usually travel at night because they need to be under sail to move. We all know there's no wind at night. Except that day it was blowing 20+ knots, and even at night it was over 10 knots. Temps were around 55 during the day, dropping to the mid 40's overnight. Not the best time for sailing, but probably they were expecting to be in by sunset. The report said this "unfolded on the 6PM news" so it sounds like they thought they'd be powering in by sunset but the engine died. |
