Should have rescued the kids and left the parents on the rock...

True enough, anyone can make mistakes. OTOH there are
mistakes anybody could make, then there are mistakes one
makes only if careless or stupid.

Taking kids out in bad weather (predicted to get worse, and
cold to boot) is something that only skilled sailors should
do... except they probably wouldn't. Hitting rocks at night,
even if lit, is an easier mistake to make. I got the
impression the people waited helplessly for rescue, also not
something a skilled sailor would be likely to do.

"Learn from the mistakes of others, you can't possibly live
long enough to make all of them yourself." -wise old saying.
