Nutsy,
You keep showing pictures of an empty Cockpit, with nothing to compare size. How about this; http://www.somerset sail.com/sails/ beneteau--35S5.jpg 2 men in the Cockpit, 1 behind the wheel; A full cockpit. Small cockpit. Your own photo as proof! Check & mate, Ole Thom |

It's a large cockpit by any measure for any sailboat under 40 feet. No one has ever said otherwise...except you. It was the first thing my wife liked about the boat as 3 people can easily sit on either side with room to spare. RB |

PHRF:---
It is basically a tool to get different types of Boats to sail together in a Race Format. Those people who race with their "Wallet" and compete in PHRF are usually paying a very high price for the :"Hardware" they receive at the Yacht Club Banquet. That doesn't mean that you can't get some Very Good Competiton under PHRF. It's there for both |

Nutsy,
If you've got a 35s5 you've got a fast boat (Sail Right) You shouldn't have to look at many sterns for to long. It's a damn good, fast boat. That being said, don't make claims about it that are BS. The Cockpit is Small because of the Swim Platform. The Rack & Pinion set-up is used to save space. Pure and Simple. The feed back is all in your mind. If you're getting FB you better check your sail trim. Your Helm should be neutral! "Benny" designed an awful lot into the Ass End of the 35s5 and it cost them space. How Much? I Don't think to much. I like the boat. I also like honesty! Stop making claims that exist only in your; pardon the expression. mind. Ole Thom |

like honesty! Stop making claims that exist only in your; pardon the expression. mind. 35s5 cockpit length is 8.5' Thom. Even with the pedestal there's room to stretch out. It's a bigger cockpit than the generous sized ones on a Catalina 34 or 36. The seats, also designed to be workable crew platforms are quite wide as well. If you want "proof" I'll post pics of us aboard the boat after the 22nd. I've told no lies about the 35s5. Robert B 35s5 NY |

The
feed back is all in your mind. If you're getting FB you better check your sail trim. Your Helm should be neutral! This is a surprising comment, Thom. No helm is nuetral all the time and rarely 100% nuetral. If it was you'd have a non changing sea-state and ideal trim day and night. Not possible. With a tiller you have the best feedback available, the rack and pinion setup is the next best thing, followed by cables...which leave most of the feedback at home. The Whitlock system was not designed into the boat to save space. It was chosen because it was better and Beneteau pushed that fact at the boat shows. The steering system prompted quite a bit of happy discussion during the sea trials. We all could tell the difference. After a few tacks I had a feel for the 35s5 faster than any other boat I've sailed. While some of this can be attributed to the excellent design overall, the Whitlock system is part of that and is superior to cable based setups. Getting back to the cockpit, my next set of pics will show you how amazingly large it is. So much so, that I might have shaved a foot of it off for a longer cabin trunk. Like the C&C 99, we simply found the 35s5 hit all the right notes. You're welcome to come for a sail and see for yourself. RB |

Nutsy,
If you're getting enough pressure on the rudder that you can feel it on the wheel, you are sailing; "with the brakes on" When I say Neutral Helm, I'm talking about a 10 degree either way of TDC on the master spoke. Really Nutsy, anymore than that and you're either out of trim or out of the groove. Some of you small boat sailors should be able to enlighten us 'naval truck" drivers on this subject. Please do. |

TDC on the master spoke. Really Nutsy, anymore than that and you're either out of trim or out of the groove. On a performance boat the margins are a lot smaller than 10 degrees and even small variations should be felt by properly sensitive helm. The helm on the C&C gave me better feedback than the Pearson. But the 35s5 is in another world feedback wise. RB |
