![]() I'm about to order a 5HP outboard to go with my new 10' Porta-bote. Anyone have any real info on which 5HP 4 cycle outboard is best currently? Thanks, RB |

Most of them are made by the same company, so it doesn't really matter which you buy: Mercury, Yamaha, Johnson. One exception is the Honda, which is made by Honda. And they are generally considered to be a cut above everyone else's four-stroke outboards. But they cost more, too. Not sure about the Nissan/Tohatsu, but it appears to be similar to the Merc/Yam/etc. All of the small four-strokes are fine engines, and I doubt if you will go wrong with any of them. Just curious--why do you want a four-stroke? In that size range the two-strokes generally work just as well and don't pay the weight or price penalty. Max |

There is Yamaha, then there are the also rans, wanna be's, close to's, and
from there it runs down hill Yamaha can't be considered because their engines are too heavy in the protable range. They've focused more on their big engine technology and lag behind Merc/Nissan/Honda. RB |

RB Yamaha F4 - 4 HP, 38 pounds Not for the 4 cycle, which is what I'd prefer. 4HP is 48 lbs and the 6 is 83LBs compared to Nissan's 55. http://www.yamaha-motor.com/products...c=otb&cid=19&s cid=5&but=19&year=2005&cat=Four+Stroke+Series&scat =Portable RB |
