Default Better Outboard?

I'm about to order a 5HP outboard to go with my new 10' Porta-bote. Anyone have
any real info on which 5HP 4 cycle outboard is best currently?

Thanks,

RB

Most of them are made by the same company, so it doesn't really matter which
you buy: Mercury, Yamaha, Johnson. One exception is the Honda, which is
made by Honda. And they are generally considered to be a cut above everyone
else's four-stroke outboards. But they cost more, too. Not sure about the
Nissan/Tohatsu, but it appears to be similar to the Merc/Yam/etc. All of
the small four-strokes are fine engines, and I doubt if you will go wrong
with any of them.

Just curious--why do you want a four-stroke? In that size range the
two-strokes generally work just as well and don't pay the weight or price
penalty.

There is a 7 pound penalty in the Merc range for example. That's worth having a
cleaner quieter engine that takes regular gas.

That's legitimate. What is the price difference?

The extra 1 HP won't make any difference really. I doubt that it will
plane with two of you in it with 5HP and it will plane with just one
with 4Hp -especially if it's propped properly

A Porta-Bote will plane with two people and 4HP.

Yamaha can't be considered because their engines are too heavy in the protable
range. They've focused more on their big engine technology and lag behind
Merc/Nissan/Honda.
