It quite possibly is (haven't studied the etymology) - there are several firths in Scotland... Firth Of Clyde, Firth Of Tay, Moray Firth, Solway Firth, etc. An exception to the estuary idea is the Pentland Firth, which is actually the seaway between the mainland and Orkney.
