Katy, I'm not sure you have a proper appreciation for the great traditions and history of sailing through the years. I don't think I can buy your argument, Katy. A wind instrument gives
essentially no information that an experienced observer can't deduce by eye. On a trailerable boat, an anemometer is a pain to deal with. "katysails" wrote in message ... Are you taking away my points? The water is flat. The wind had died long ago. You were sailing in dead air for a long time with a reefed main. I would have taken out the reef long ago. Why? We were CRUISING, not racing. Also we were running w/the wind all morning so the main wasn't 'doing much'. You have no concept of how the rig works. Pathetic Earthlings! No one can save you now! |

Why do you criticize my estimate of the wind speed but not his, when he wasn't even there? Because whitecaps usually begin forming around 8 knots and are regular at 10. If a doofus like you notices them then it might be blowing as much as twelve, but it still could only have been eight. If motorboat wakes are bigger than the chop, then the wind wasn't anywhere near 20. DSK You might want to read my note again DSK. I didn't say that the whitecaps were "beginning" to form. They were there when we went out and stayed there throughout the afternoon. (Incidentally, my copy of the Beaufort scale indicates that crests are "beginning to break" in winds of up to 10 knots. - You must have a different version.) Also, I didn't say that the motorboat wakes were "bigger" than the chop, did I? Incidentally, my estimate of the wind speed was also based on the opinion of an experienced licensed pilot who was with me on that particular trip. As one reference point, we noted that very few of the boats out on that day had deployed anything other than a reefed mainsail. Jim |
