WTF do pilots know about judging wind speed?

You are kidding, right?

Well if you limit the set to those pilots that have never learned cross

Unless they are landing in a place with no ground control, they don't
have to judge the wind at all. They don't even have to ask; somebody
else who knows makes it a point to tell them exactly what the wind is...
several times over, in fact.

OK. Being a kind and reasonable person, I'm forced to admit that
you're right, and I was being unnecessarily cruel in my comments,
and that your move to Tasmania _has_ improved the local gene pool
significantly, as well as improving Sydney's.

Yep. I have 3 bright kids still living in Sydney so you're 100%
correct, I've improved both gene pools!

Not quite the way you meant, of course, and you could have had the
decency to acknowledge a paraphrase of Piggy Muldoon.

Was unaware of it. Normally when I am aware of such, I take care
to quote ("xxx"). In this case, I suspect parallel evolution in
language: an obvious derivation which is made in multiple cases,
not necessarily connected.

IIRC Piggy once said, of Kiwis heading to Oz, that this migration would
raise the IQ of both countries.

Ah well. I'll have my revenge on Sydney, Sydneysiders and Sydney
exiles soon (soon, soon!) (I hope...)

No need. Living in Sydney is the revenge.

I can't speak for any flight schools except for our local school; here pilots are taught to
look at various things on the ground to judge wind speed. As you point out though, there are several
small fields in our area that are uncontrolled, so perhaps this is not universal.

Every small field I've seen round here has a big oarnge wind sock. Even the
guys with ultra lites in their barn.

How's the new boat?

Wind socks now give windspeed?

How's the new boat?

New boat is great, anchored in front of the house (danforth and bruce).

Marty, they always did. That's the reason for their strange but
very standard shape. Flags weren't consistent enough.
