Cig. butts are nothing but some tobaco fragments and a little paper (wood)
Natural stuff that will decompose and be gone in a week. Some people should give it a rest. S/V Express 30 "Ringmaster" "No shirt, no skirt, full service" |

Actually the filter part of cigarrette butts is fiberglass that will not decompose for years, and the "paper" is plasticized to the point where it will also not degrade easily either. ... Umm, no. Actually the filter part of cigarrette butts is fiberglass that
will not decompose for years, and the "paper" is plasticized to the point where it will also not degrade easily either. I wasn't including filtered cigs. I agree with the filter problem but if the paper is "plasticized" then why does it burn like paper and not melt and stink like burning plastic. Sorry, that wasn't clear. I meant the part of the paper that's wrapped around the filter. Try burning a cigarette filter some time, if you've got a strong stomach. DSK |

Not always true. The cigs I used to smoke would burn if you lit the filter... Maybe it was plastic or paper? Cheers ... Some people should give it a rest. Some people (many, actually) should wake up. I think if you do a little research you will find the "fiberglass-in-the-filter" to be an urban myth, "Don't smoke brand X, they have fiberglass in the filter and you'll die of some horrible lung desease!"; right, like lung cancer is not a 'horrible' lung desease. Sheese. Cheers Marty |

Which is the same stuff as fiberglass even if you can't build a boat out of it. Anyway they still don't decompose in a week like Loco said. I don't believe the claim that it takes seven years, but at least a couple of months seems likely. ..."Don't smoke brand X, they have fiberglass in the filter and you'll die of some horrible lung desease!"; right, like lung cancer is not a 'horrible' lung desease. Sheese. C'mon everybody knows it's genetics that determines whether you get cancer. Regards Doug King |

Ahhh, if that were only true, but most smokers use filter-tipped cigarettes and those gawd damn filters are forever. So there's the answer - ban the filters! As Loco says, the rest is biodegradable. |
