Default Marina Woes

Haggie observed: I don't
think the marinas care about their reputations anymore, there are probably
10 boats waiting for every slip around here.

That was one of the reasons we switched to a mooring and the yacht club
environment. The marina that we had been at for years became "popular" with
a certain sort of boater, and all of a sudden there was a waiting list.
Along with that came a nonchalance about work performed by the yard. When
confronted about mistakes, or poor quality workmanship, they would laugh it
off and refuse to make good. If they didn't feel like performing some type
of work they would quote an exorbitant figure to make you go elsewhere. And
when sailing is supposed to be your "release" from the rest of the daily
crud, who needs problems there?

My place is real popular with the Speedboat/Cigarboat freaks. But they
have only 3 uncovered sailboat slips. Most sailboaters will not come
here because of the noise the powerboaters make. But the pbr's hate it
when it to hot, and when its to cold, so I have most of the time the
place to myself. They pay out the nose for thier covered slips. The
marina owner give me a good deal because he want's me to live here and
watch out for things. I'm offical F dock security, I run off all the
fishing guys and lovers that want to use the island. Ive lived at
several marinas and can tell you the only way I will ever get a better
deal is if I buy my marina. I have my eye on 3 acres of deep water
fronted land. But the asking price is 300K. It would make a nice 3-4
boat marina and allow me space to build a house. It has a small cinder
block type storage house on it now. It borders a wildlife refuge of
6000+ acres and I will never have to worry about the surrounding land
being developed. Just need the 300K. Donations accepted!
