| Running rigging should be replaced after 8 to 10 years. It's not expensive
and
| easy to do. I've replaced all of my running rigging and most of the
standing.
| Not a huge expense and less worry. I bet Scotty Potti's standing rigging
is
| original as well.

WOW.... you replaced your standing rigging?? Mine's original... but my
buddy who does rigging for a living inspected it and said it was in fine
shape. I pull the mast every season [mostly] and the swaged ends are placed
in plastic bags hung to prevent draining to the turnbuckles.

I wonder how much it would cost to replace the standing rigging on
Overproof.....

| BTW.... how many halyards do you have on Alien??
|
| 5. Can you name them?

WOW... you have 5 sheaves on your masthead?? I only have 4 halyards.....
but I can rig and run 6 on my mast...all internal. Hey... maybe I'll use my
old main and jib halyard to run all 6 this year. Then again all my jibs are
hank ons so the feasibility of running two jibs on one forestay exist.

I carry 2 main halyards and 2 jib halyards.... one of which doubles as a
spinnaker halyard.

I thought you had roller furling? If so.... I'd be hard pressed to figure
why you have 5 halyards... unless 3 of them are never used. I've never seen
a photo of Alien with a chute.... or a storm trysail rigged.

I was lucky in that Alien came with new rigging. All I had to do was install
it. I replaced the running rigging over the last two seasons. Only the spin
halyard is original. I flew the spin maybe 5 or 6 times last season, but I'll
replace it this season. I had a rigging guy go aloft this season to check
everything. Again, it's cheap insurance.
Replacing the running rigging is easier on the hands (new stuff is great!),
which could be key in certain situations. It also looks better. Either one is
reason enough. I'm replacing my mainsheet tomorrow with an oversized line to
see how that works.

If you know someone who will cut you a break, figure anywhere from 1K on up. A
Cal 29 near me just did his for just under 2K.

Roller furling still has a halyard - how else would it get up there? I have
main, jib and spinnaker, plus a spare messenger on a sheave, plus a flag
halyard. In a pinch, the topping lift could be used as a halyard.

Two flag, three on the masthead!

That's actually the 1st time we flew the spin and it was just about 2 knots of
air.

Good point. And technically the topping lift IS a halyard.

I just checked with my buddy who had all the standing rigging replaced on
his Bayfield 29.... it cost him over 2.5 K. Mind you his rigging is
smaller than mine. What are you using on your boat?

You had brand new standing rigging inspected? Man... that costs money up
here.It's a C-note service call.

I've seen people do that [oversize].... never with any benefit. Also I'm
not sure if I concur with your premise that new rope is easier on the hands
since very little "handling" is done on the final tensioning with a winch
and tailing.

BTW... what are your 5 halyards used for?

I have rod rigging. I replaced it all except the forstay, which I may do this
season. It would have been very pricey if it didn't come with the boat and some
folks will just go to wire. I'm happy with the rod rigging though...very nice
to grab on to!
2.5 sounds high to me. A lot also depends on replacing the rigging inclusive of
all fittings and turnbuckles of course.
