How bout KeY West to Dry Tortugas?

Eisboch Next time W'hine responds to a post of mine that has nothing to do with him, ask W'hine that. Go ahead...make my day. Virtually every ****ing contest going on in rec.boats is a series of prompts/responses to some original comment, likely made years ago that nobody can remember. I used to scold my kids when they were 4 or 5 years old to stop doing this. Eisboch The point is, you are quick to jump on my comments, but I don't see you jumping on W'hine's "snarky" comments aimed in my direction, nor have I noticed you jumping on similar comments from "The Seven," or from your buddy SW. Have you ever considered what is the common denominator? Eisboch Sure. There are a dozen or so "righties" who don't like my political views, and they try to "bash" me at every opportunity. My complete dislike for Harry has nothing to do with his politics. I am a moderate liberal, Loogie politics is very similar to Harry's. Most people don't like Harry because of his behavior and his politics is secondary. All in all, Harry's problem is he is Harry. |

If you can reach another boat on the radio, and they can relay a message to SeaTow, they might come out and get you - at a very steep price, probably in the thousands. Free towing only goes 25 miles. USCG will do almost anything to avoid coming out for you - you'll have to convince someone that lives are at stake, and that's if you can get through to them at That's for sure. Even if you set off an EPIRB, they'll ask for other people to try and confirm it's a real emergency before they send anything out. With all those boats in south Florida, do you know how many false alarms they get? There's no way they can send out resources to all of them without confirmation. Although you might have a better chance if it goes off 50 miles from shore in bad weather than in a marina. Steve |

Sorry, W'hine...your aimless, self-indulgent, peripatetic lifestyle doesn't appeal to me. Perhaps if I lived along a Norway-rat infested canal in the hell-like heat of south Florida, though, I might want to leave Dodge as often as possible. Are those houses across that canal clad in real stucco over CMU, or are they - ugh - dryvit? |

The west coast of Florida south of Everglades City is 100 miles of wilderness until you get to the Keys. Another interesting consideration is that there are no supplies in the Tortugas or anywhere else between there and Key West. Going from KW you need a safe working range of at least 150 miles, from Everglades City more like 250 miles. Good points, and care must be taken in that type journey. I think the guy I mentioned had a kicker, but I can't get into the forum's search function to find out. Anyway, as I recall when I read it, it wasn't a voyage I wanted to undertake with that boat. My dad has fond memories of a couple Tortugas fishing trips he took. 3-day deals where you had berths on the fishing boat to nap in. Fish, nap, fish, eat, fish, ****, fish, fish, eat, fish, etc. It was over 10 years ago and he recalls paying 200 bucks. I think it was this boat, http://www.gotothekeys.com/florida_fish_finder_main.htm 115 footer. Caught lots of fish, and the food on the boat was pretty good. Seas were almost flat on his trips. --Vic |
