How bout KeY West to Dry Tortugas?
Its roughly 68 miles from Key West to Dry Tortugas over shallow
water. About 20 miles out one can stop at the Marquesas. This might be a good Tolman trip |

We did it last January and got beat up a bit on the return trip - 25 kts out of the north with 6 to 7 foot beam seas most of the way. There is also a nice little anchorage at Boca Grande Key east of the Marquesas. In the summer time you still have thunderstorm risk but you have the option of seeking shelter or beating a retreat. The longest open water passage is about 30 nautical miles. You will be just about the smallest boat out there, even the Cuban refugees use bigger. There was a Carolina Skiff guy who did that trip - maybe multiple times. Think he had a 20.' Flat water, and he was moving pretty good. But he started on the mainland - Everglades City? --Vic |

If you were a nice guy, D'whine, you'd offer to "convoy" with O'Hara. After all, you're both in Florida, and you certainly have nothing of importance to do anymore. Right? And what exactly is it that you do that is so important WAFA ? |

Just about any kind of trip like that is possible on the right day. The fun starts when things start going wrong and cascade out of control. What if you break down out there 50 miles from the mainland? Your cell phone and VHF don't have enough range. If you can reach another boat on the radio, and they can relay a message to SeaTow, they might come out and get you - at a very steep price, probably in the thousands. Free towing only goes 25 miles. USCG will do almost anything to avoid coming out for you - you'll have to convince someone that lives are at stake, and that's if you can get through to them at all. The west coast of Florida south of Everglades City is 100 miles of wilderness until you get to the Keys. Another interesting consideration is that there are no supplies in the Tortugas or anywhere else between there and Key West. Going from KW you need a safe working range of at least 150 miles, from Everglades City more like 250 miles. |

Here we have a perfect example of Harry being Harry. Wayne's post was informative to the OP's question, and had absolutely no reference to Harry. Yet, Harry is compelled to respond with a snarky comment. Why? Eisboch |
