Was listening to a Jazz station a couple of days ago and they were doing
an all time great guitar countdown. Carlos Santana was 15th and Eric
Clapton ranked 4th. Who else would be high on the list?

I'll betcha Jimi Henrix was number one ... or close.

No way.

Well, if the ratings Jim mentioned were Jazz artists only ..... I'd agree.
But if it was for the greatest guitarists overall, then Hendrix
consistently rates number one or two.

This guy might have summed it :

guitarzan6000 // Mar 4, 2008 at 6:57 am

You gotta be kidding me…Joan Jett ???? I mean seriously, is this a
JOKE??? How can there even BE a
“greatest guitarist” list???? Thats like rating the top 100 “Wives” of
all time, you just can’t!!! It’s all based just on “opinions”, and you
know what they say about opinions….”Opinions are like A**holes,
everyone has one, nobody wants to hear someone else’s, and they all
stink”….

Really, I have everything he ever did, in three versions And I don't
think he is nearly the best assuming they are looking for technical
skills Now interpretation, could very well be, especially when Mitch
was talking back

I am not a big Jimi Henrix fan, but respect his position in the various
ratings and his heritage.
He was noted more for interpretation, as you say, I think.
I just was never into his type of music.

I know, I was playing your riff and noted that is was probably
something written when rock was still "happy" music.. Rock around the
Clock, Hand Jive, type stuff. Before it got mad and dark...

Have you ever seen the ads late at night for "The Midnight Special"
series? If not, look it up, and sign up. I guarantee you will love it,
if not you can stop anytime...

I liked his version of "Hey Joe" - that's a good one.

He also did a cover of "Smack Water Jack" - (Quincy Jones/Carol King
collaboration) which is out-freakin'-standing.
