One of my near neigbors has an 18-foot center console with a 115 Yamaha on it. It's not a bay boat, but a "regular" cc, popular brand. His bare boat is at least 1200 pounds lighter than mine. Last time I was out, we were both heading back to the marina at the same time, and there was at least a two foot chop. He was chugging along at about 13 knots, and I went "flying" by him at about 23-25 knots. When we got to the ramp, he wanted to know why I could go so much faster than he could without bouncing like crazy. I told him I thought it was weight, and the fact that my boat has slightly more vee. My guess was that my boat in total was cost to 1600 pounds heavier than his, and in small center consoles, weight matters in a chop. |
