Number of murders and crime down in Chicago

CHICAGO (AP) - The Chicago Police Department says crime is down and
the murder rate could be at its lowest in 42 years.

The trend in Chicago is part of an overall decline in crime
nationwide.

Before 2003, Chicago reported more than 600 murders a year.

There were 471 murders last year; so far this year, 428 have been
reported, Chicago police spokeswoman Monique Bond said.

Police are working to dismantle gang leadership and remove drugs and
guns from the streets, she said. This year, Chicago police recovered
13,474 guns, including 6,003 from a gun turn-in program.

Demographers say the growth rate in major metropolitan areas is
slowing, which also means less crime.

Chicago lost 62,000 residents between 2000 and last year, Loyola
University professor Kenneth Johnson said.

It'll have to be a real slow last seven months for the murder rate not to
exceed the "before 2003 rate of 600/year".

The city is on track to come close to, or exceed 1,000 this year.

Did *I* write that? I just pointed out that Chicago's (I lived there for 50
years) violent crimes are on the up-swing this year.

When you extrapolate this the numbers YTD, it doesn't look like crime is
down as the article would have you believe after reading the first sentence.

You should have posted the date the article was written. That's a 12-2007
piece so the "428 murders" for "this" year actually applies to 12-2007 YTD
not YTD 2008.

I should have known better to trust some cut and paste here without a date.

Where did I say or imply that it was 2008? 2008 isn't over with yet.
Now, back to the intent:
Do you maintain that deaths in Chicago by the hand of others are
anywhere near the deaths in Iraq by the hands of others?
Probably hundreds of times more deaths in Iraq. I'll look into stats.

Yeah, and Billary can't tell the truth to save their lives..
Now
he
is
saying Obama used the race card.. they have him on tape. The
next
day
he denied it, also on tape... sniper fire indeed. But I know,
is,
is.... Don't you even care Harry?

What I care about is that on inauguration day in January, a
Democrat
is
sworn in as POTUS.

Vote McCain, he sucks less. If Obama could accomplish anything,
why
would
Chicago be more dangerous than Iraq?- Hide quoted text -

It isn't. That's a well worn out tactic that is based on no fact.-

You should watch the news more often. 10 dead, and nearly 40 shot in
Chicago just in the last week.- Hide quoted text -

Still doesn't add up, not by a long shot.

Damn close. Is a supposedly modern city in America. Been a Politically
controlled town for ever, and this is what we have?- Hide quoted text -

Nope. No where near close.

The city is on track to come close to, or exceed 1,000 this year.- Hide

And you think that's near the number of murders and needless deaths in
Iraq??????

Did *I* write that? *I just pointed out that Chicago's (I lived there for 50
years) violent crimes are on the up-swing this year.

When you extrapolate this the numbers YTD, it doesn't look like crime is
down as the article would have you believe after reading the first sentence.

You should have posted the date the article was written. *That's a 12-2007
piece so the "428 murders" for "this" year actually applies to 12-2007 YTD
not YTD 2008.

I should have known better to trust some cut and paste here without a date..- Hide quoted text -

He

It fluctuates, because it's by the week, but you can clearly see that
it's between 500 and a thousand per WEEK. How close to that is
Chicago's murder rate again?
