Number of murders and crime down in Chicago

CHICAGO (AP) - The Chicago Police Department says crime is down and
the murder rate could be at its lowest in 42 years.

The trend in Chicago is part of an overall decline in crime
nationwide.

Before 2003, Chicago reported more than 600 murders a year.

There were 471 murders last year; so far this year, 428 have been
reported, Chicago police spokeswoman Monique Bond said.

Police are working to dismantle gang leadership and remove drugs and
guns from the streets, she said. This year, Chicago police recovered
13,474 guns, including 6,003 from a gun turn-in program.

Demographers say the growth rate in major metropolitan areas is
slowing, which also means less crime.

Chicago lost 62,000 residents between 2000 and last year, Loyola
University professor Kenneth Johnson said.

Probably hundreds of times more deaths in Iraq. I'll look into stats.

Big difference is whether you're volunteering to be shot at.
In '68 I was running a tractor shoe press in at IH in Chicago.
My quencher was a south side black guy who had done a couple tours in
Viet Nam. I was south side too but didn't travel in his circles.
Shortly after meeting him I noticed a nasty bullet scar on his arm and
asked if he was wounded in Viet Nam.
His answer was succinct.
"No. 63rd and State Street."

--Vic

No, most of the deaths in Iraq aren't people who have volunteered,
they are innocent victims.

Just like the 100,000 a year that Saddam was killing?

It'll have to be a real slow last seven months for the murder rate not
to
exceed the "before 2003 rate of 600/year".
The city is on track to come close to, or exceed 1,000 this year.-

And you think that's near the number of murders and needless deaths in
Iraq??????
Did *I* write that? I just pointed out that Chicago's (I lived there for
50
years) violent crimes are on the up-swing this year.
When you extrapolate this the numbers YTD, it doesn't look like crime is
down as the article would have you believe after reading the first
sentence.
You should have posted the date the article was written. That's a
12-2007
piece so the "428 murders" for "this" year actually applies to 12-2007
YTD
not YTD 2008.
I should have known better to trust some cut and paste here without a
date.- Hide quoted text -

It fluctuates, because it's by the week, but you can clearly see that
it's between 500 and a thousand per WEEK. How close to that is
Chicago's murder rate again?

Read my post above and see if you can understand it.- Hide quoted text -

You were in agreement with those who have stated in this thread that
Chicago is akin to Iraq in numbers of deaths from the hand of others.

=====================================

You are a freakin dunder head. I never agreed to any such thing. You claim
to have a masters degree in something or another, where did you get your
diploma?

There you go, insulting honest dunderheads everywhere.

No, most of the deaths in Iraq aren't people who have volunteered,
they are innocent victims.

Just like the 100,000 a year that Saddam was killing?

Yes, it's much more morally superior to die as a result of U.S.
involvement in Iraq.

Kill em all, let alla sort them out.
