I purchased a 90 etec 2006 for my center console, I am removing a 1978
evinrude 70. anyone know what I need to rig the etec. I am willing to get a new binnacle control, but what else do I need. I was told there is an adapter that can be used for the harness, the 77 has the red plug harness. If I could get a list that would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance, Joe |

The last one I did with/for a guy we changed everything from the binnacle, wiring harness, guages (I believe you will need a new "smart" guage - a combination speedo/alarm setup, but don't hold me to that), added the oil tank/supply line, ran a seperate feed for gas (which required a tankk cleaning which is a story by itself) and that pretty much was it. With respect to converting the older harness to ETEC, I believe you can - there is a plug adapter for that harness I think. Having said that, there may be a age limiter on that harness - like it may be too old - that I don't honestly know. Billgran should be around during the next few days - he will know for sure. But that give you an idea of what it took to do it when I was involved in a change over. Good luck. |

Thanks for the quick response,
I don't need an external oil tank, it has an internal tank, you need an external on the115 HP and up. I will gladly wait for Billigran! "Short Wave Sportfishing" wrote in message ... Then again, I'm a 200 hp and up kind of boater. :) You will really like that engine - it's probably the best 90 horse engine on the market. I know quite a few locals who have them and absolutely wouldn't give 'em up for anything. Power up the wazoo and efficient as all get out - you will be pleasantly surprised. I almost bought a 18 foot Ranger bass boat with a 90 HO ETEC on it - I think they made an HO in 2006. Anyway, I didn't buy it - should have now that I look back on it. In any case, you will really like that engine. |

Thanks for your help and advice, I will go with a new harness, system check
gauge, I will use the Tach That I already have. The I command classic that I would like to have is prohibitively expensive, but it would be nice to have. Being in a technical field for over 30 years, having experience in Automotive OBDII and having a laptop interface for this application, hooking up a laptop to the Etec is probably feasible. But I am sure the program, hardware and protocol is proprietary, and it is kept out of the hands of backyard techs like me? It has to be a serial connection, with transmit, receive and ground, but I am sure the connector would be hard to get into my hands. But most people would rather bring it to the dealer, and being in a fishing club I find this to be true. The guys in my club would rather not get involved. But it is a shame that a guy like me who can fix just about anything can't do this, but I guess it is in the manufacturers best interest. Can I prime the oil system by performing the winterizing procedure, in the book it states that this can be done? I also will be purchasing the service manual for this engine. Any more help will be greatly appreciated Bill. Joe "Billgran" wrote in message ... "z1r1200cc" wrote in message ... I was told there is an adapter that can be used for the harness, the 77 has the red plug harness. The wiring harness changed in 1996 so you need the adapter kit if you are really going to use your 30 year old wiring instead of buying new. It may even be cheaper to get the new harness and key switch in your case. You also need a 2" SystemCheck gauge or the SystemCheck tach with the 4 indicator warning lights as required by Evinrude to keep in warranty. Evinrude has a great rigging book with step by step instructions from how to find the center of your boat's transom, to hooking up and adjusting cables. E-TEC rigging book #5007085 If you are rigging it yourself, do everything according to industry practices, don't "make do" or fabricate something just to make it work. Remember that warranty only covers manufacturer's defects, not adjustments, incorrect rigging or wiring, fuel or oil contamination or delivery, or anything not factory or industry approved. Do not start the motor yourself. Pay an authorized dealer to check out the rigging (if you did your own), and bleed the oil system, and make sure the motor has the latest software revision in it. Then the dealer can start the motor, with the laptop connected to prime the oil system. Dealer contracts with Evinrude require a pre-delivery form be filled out (PDI) on delivery and no motors are to be sold in a box to the end consumer. Make sure the checking dealer fills out the form and gives you a copy for your records. In a few weeks, call Evirude customer service and be sure they have a record of your motor's serial number for warranty purposes. Good luck and enjoy your motor. The E-TECs are great, very quiet, and start instantly every time. Bill Grannis service manager |

Thanks Bill much appreciated!!
If you have any telecommunications needs, for Nortel, Norstar, Executone, or any general questions just send me an email directly. I will probably have more questions forthcoming, once I get started on the rigging, but hopefully not. Thanks again. Or... If you have any of these phones in your office and just would like a new clean one let me know. Joe "Billgran" wrote in message ... "z1r1200cc" wrote in message ... You can purchase from a dealer the diagnostic software on CD which will run on Windows along with the interface cable and you can get a quality USB to serial port adapter for late model laptops. It will be a read only software as you cannot make engine changes with it as it cannot be registered with the factory as a dealer can. You can find all the engine info, any error codes, etc. but you cannot change engine settings or timing. Here is a link about the software availability http://bluewaterboat.com/software_ficht_etec.htm The service manuals are great, easy to read, and have lots of illustrations and explanations. Yep, you can use the winterizing procedure for priming, but you should do it 3 times to make sure all the air is out. The important things on the motor are to get the latest software which will make you motor the same as a 2007. Also use the laptop to watch the idle temperature, it should be close to 160°. It it is lower, replace the thermostat and the pressure relief valve and rubber seat. Be sure to use the correct sparkplug number and index them. It's all in the book. Bill Grannis service manager |
