SURE! Happy New Year! How did it go? Happy New Year to you and your family also. Oh Jim,A Happy New Year to you and yours as well! The gig was great! I've played with these guys before, and it was a 40's big band type set up. we did stuff by Glen Miller, Harry James, Benny Goodman, Stan Kenton, etc. etc. About anything delicious was available. Anything from Prim rib (I don't eat raw meat, though) to crab puffs, alaskan salmon, and the list goes on. I took it easy on the eats,. No need to stuff yourself and be miserable for a week. This was a corp. affair. Very good crowd, and no loud rolling drunks. Some gal wanted to sing with the band, and usually that turns into some catastrophe, but the main guy with the band knew her and seeing she is the CEO's daughter.. well.... she did a great job on Tommy Dorsey's "I'm getting sentimental over you" You could tell she was a fan of Diana Krall. I confess, I really didn't know that tune very well, so I "faked it" (stumbled though it) and it did turn out rather well....I think. About 200 +/- people there. Played for 4 hrs, got $400.00. Plus, did an extra 1/2 hr. got another $100.00. A lot of money throwing around for a 5 piece band. These guys are a whole lot more top class than I am. The guitar player is right up there with the likes of Joe Pass, or Barney Kessel. When he was younger and lived in New york, he used to get playing tips from Les Paul himself. Anyhow, the wife and I got home at about 6:30 yesterday morning, and I must have slept till about 3 in the afternoon, then laid around the rest of the day and evening. It sure was fun, but I wouldn't want to make a steady habit of it anymore. Glad I didn't have to go to work the next day. But if they call again, I'll probably do it again. |

Yep, and we've got some great blues and Q places around here! You've got it made! There's nothing around my place to hear a good blues band, that is unless I go 100 mi. to the St. Louis area then there the blues joints seem to be a dime a dozen. I rememeber a couple years ago I was in the St.L area and went down to the Broadway Oyster Bar . It's a run down old place, or at least looks that way on the outside. Inside it's blues bar in the front and cajun sea food in the back. You walk into the place and you know they mean business. Perfect! The night I was there, the band was "Erma Bakker and the St. Louis All- Stars" Erma was about 5'5", was about as round as she was tall, verrrry black, and had a gold cross on one of her front teeth. Man could she belt the blues! She had one of those magicly raunchy voices that was perfect for that type of venue. Plus the lead guitarist could handle a Strat like very much like Rory Galleger, and play slide like Johnny Winter. I couldn't hang around long, but for about an hr. and a half I was in 7th heaven. In ways I wish that kind of thing was local shearly for the easy access, but then again, it would probably get old if it was available all the time next time I'm down there, I'll hit the place up again. http://www.broadwayoysterbar.com/ |

Kind of ruins it for me. Funny story about blues music. Way back in time, New Orleans Civic Auditorium - BB King and band. I was still in the service and of my buddies got five of us tickets - excellant seats - third row back/center - out freakin' standing. I'm normally oblivious to things and I didn't notice that I was the only white guy sitting in that area - meaning floor seats - kinda stood out if you get what I mean. So I'm digging on the music and having a great time - first set goes by, break, then out for the second set. Band is starting up with some kind of high energy R&B thing and BB steps up to the microphrone, starts with Lucille and says - "This one's for the white guy down front" and swings into this rockin' blues number. I'm thinking "white guy down front" then my buddy says "I think he means you". I look around and sure enough... :) Pretty cool. |

SURE! Happy New Year! That's excellent especially since NYE gigs usually pay about twice what other gigs do. Hope you had fun. My current cover band took the night off because our lead singer had plans to be away then, that she already had when she joined the band earlier this year. I kept hoping to get a similar last minute call for a fill-in (I play keyboards), you never know, but nope ended up staying home with the wife and kids to watch the ball drop and Miley Cyrus and Carrie Underwood and Fall Out Boy sing on tv. Boy for some reason New Year's Eve seemed to be a lot more fun twenty years ago or so! Luckily the band I'm working regularly with now already has a pretty full slate of gigs filling in all the way through the summer, so that should help keep out on the water on the waverunner this summer. richforman |

wrote: That's excellent especially since NYE gigs usually pay about twice what other gigs do. Hope you had fun. Well, that also goes with the geographical location as well. I'm talking about Southern Centeral Illinois, not Chicago, NyC. or LA. The fun was worth more than the gig pay, though. My current cover band took the night off because our lead singer had plans to be away then, that she already had when she joined the band earlier this year. I kept hoping to get a similar last minute call for a fill-in (I play keyboards), One time you might, and I hope you do! you never know, but nope ended up staying home with the wife and kids to watch the ball drop and Miley Cyrus and Carrie Underwood and Fall Out Boy sing on tv. ZZZZzzzzzzz! Boy for some reason New Year's Eve seemed to be a lot more fun twenty years ago or so! No kidding! Luckily the band I'm working regularly with now already has a pretty full slate of gigs filling in all the way through the summer, so that should help keep out on the water on the waverunner this summer. richforman Good luck in everything you do, Rich! |

There's nothing around my place to hear a good blues band, that is unless I go 100 mi. to the St. Louis area then there the blues joints seem to be a dime a dozen I like "blues" in general, but most of the time you see amateur blues bands that suck - big time. I like seeing local talent. There's lots and lots of damned good musicians out there that have just not been *discovered*. It's a damned hard racket to get into, especially if you have stars in your eyes. There's a local blues club here that has local talent, and some of the best soul food in the world! Almost all of the times I've been, I've been the only white guy in the place. The big ole lady that does the cooking calls me Bright, so now that's kinda my nickname in the place! She loves the fact that I feel comfortable there and love her cooking! What is the name and where is this club located? I have always loved blues, including blues/rock groups such as the Allman Bros. and Eric Clapton. Many years ago, Underground Atlanta had an old time musician who played the classic Black-blues (ie Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf etc). I think his name was Red.- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - At Dante's? Nope, it was on the main street, it was a pub and he played at the window. It was about a half a block from Dante's. I think he was blind, but it has been many years. I have always thought of Dante's asng playing Jazz , not blues.- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - They go back and forth. Seems like I go to underground every couple of years, and Dante's is either blues or jazz. It's pretty much a tourist trap, anyway.- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - There's a Dante's in the atlanta area? Unless it's a different ownership, I thought there was only one Dante's and that was in LA region. Really famous jazz club out there... It is Dante's Down the Hatch. It was designed to resemble an old windjammer. They used to have one in Underground, and one uptown in Buckhead. They have closed the Underground location.http://www.dantesdownthehatch.com/- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - Now some of the best Q without the blues bands comes from Harold's. http://atlanta.citysearch.com/profil..._barbecue.html What kind of sauce does Georgia use? Tomato based is the most common, but you can find mustard (SC style) and vinegar based (NC style) sauces at different BBQ houses. Some offer all 3. Contrary to what Harry said, great BBQ really is dependent upon the individual pit cook and not the geographic area. I have always found the smaller BBQ joints to have better BBQ, they have the time to slow cook their BBQ for 12 hrs or more. Some of the best ones are only opened 3 days a week. |
