My son has a 2000 Four Winns with a 5.7L V8 Volvo Penta (with the dual props) and it over heats when there is a large group of people on the boat and under throttle. The first thing I would check is the waterpump impeller. I read somewhere that that Volvo Penta doesn't have one in the outdrive (as my OMC or Old Merc did) - If that is the case - where is it and can a boat owner with mechanical ability check it? Are there any other suggestions as to what could be causing this problem? He bought it used earlier this year - it runs great and he has done nothing to it.- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - Does the motor still has the traditional water pump Yes. Circulation pump... on the front like a car does? If so - there are two on the front ? Yes. And a raw water pump with a rubber impeller. Off to the side or below. Rob - Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text -- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - Thanks to all who responded!- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - My Son replaced the impeller and cleaned out somerust buildup in one of the entries in the thermostat housing. He said ti seemed to work - I visited him this week and on the last day there we went out on the boat. Sure enough - take it to full throttle and it over heats - MOST of the time - one time it only went to the midpoint on the gauge. What is interesting is that the performance of the boat was horrible (accelleration was worse than my 4.3L) and full throttle RPM was only about 4200. I have a friend with an same boat and engine but a 98 instead of a 2000 and his goes to 5500 at full throttle. I am suspecting that the poor performance and overheating are related. Does anyine have any idea as to what it could be? Also, what should the top RPM be for this engine? - my 4.3 is 4800 any idea on the timing for this engine? Thanks to any and all who respond.- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - Something in the mid to high 4k rpm would be better. 5500 is too high. It is possible that the boat has a detonation issue that would cause both a performance problem and an overheating problem. But overheating can also be the cause of detonation. Which in turn causes perfomance problems. So we can't tell which came first without further work. There could also be fuel related problems. So I would do a complete inspection of the cooling system and replace the thermostat. Check the ignition timing with a timing light and test run the boat with premium fuel. If the boat has a lot of lower grade fuel in it then add octane booster and fill the rest of the way with premium. If that doesn't fix it then start checking the fuel system.- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - Glad you brought fuel up - does this boat REQUIRE PREMIUM fuel? My 4.3 requires it and learned while visting my son he has been using regular. Would you know what the timing should be? THanks in advance for your help!! |

Severe detonation for repeated and/or extended periods can result in damage. Melted piston tops, burned through head gaskets, head warping. Bad stuff. I don't know the timing for sure, common timing on chevy v8's is 4 btdc. If you're going to work on it I'd highly suggest a service manual. You can get a clymers for 30 bucks or so. |

Odly enough my merc 3.0 in my little chris craft didn't want to start very well, and even though it would pull 4000 rpm it was sluggish getting there. however it didn't seem to want to overheat according to the guages. found out it had a burnt valve on one cylinder and a bad head gasket. funny thing, head gaskets. proof that the previous owner over heated it. for one, he had a delco alternator with the wrong pully (parts store exchange) and couldn't get the belt tight SO... the water pump was slipping, to the point of almost hand turning speed when above idle. over heat. alswo my old christ craft cavilier had a sherwood remote water pump and was wanting to run hot. found out the problem was a loose belt. new (shorter) belt and all worked fine. maybe not related to your son's demise, but I'd still run a compression test. |
