Volvo Penta V8 Overheating
 
My son has a 2000 Four Winns with a 5.7L V8 Volvo Penta (with the dual
props) and it over heats when there is a large group of people on the
boat and under throttle. The first thing I would check is the
waterpump impeller. I read somewhere that that Volvo Penta doesn't
have one in the outdrive (as my OMC or Old Merc did) - If that is the
case - where is it and can a boat owner with mechanical ability check
it? Are there any other suggestions as to what could be causing this
problem? He bought it used earlier this year - it runs great and he
has done nothing to it.

And a raw water pump with a rubber impeller. Off to the side or below.

My Son replaced the impeller and cleaned out somerust buildup in one
of the entries in the thermostat housing. He said ti seemed to work -
I visited him this week and on the last day there we went out on the
boat. Sure enough - take it to full throttle and it over heats - MOST
of the time - one time it only went to the midpoint on the gauge. What
is interesting is that the performance of the boat was horrible
(accelleration was worse than my 4.3L) and full throttle RPM was only
about 4200. I have a friend with an same boat and engine but a 98
instead of a 2000 and his goes to 5500 at full throttle. I am
suspecting that the poor performance and overheating are related. Does
anyine have any idea as to what it could be?

Also, what should the top RPM be for this engine? - my 4.3 is 4800 any
idea on the timing for this engine?

Something in the mid to high 4k rpm would be better. 5500 is too
high.

It is possible that the boat has a detonation issue that would cause
both a performance problem and an overheating problem. But
overheating can also be the cause of detonation. Which in turn causes
perfomance problems. So we can't tell which came first without
further work. There could also be fuel related problems.

So I would do a complete inspection of the cooling system and replace
the thermostat. Check the ignition timing with a timing light and
test run the boat with premium fuel. If the boat has a lot of lower
grade fuel in it then add octane booster and fill the rest of the way
with premium. If that doesn't fix it then start checking the fuel
system.
