John H- Hide quoted text -

Yeah, really? No one even commented. I thought I would hold off, but
geeze. Anyway, I like the lines of the hull on many of their smaller
boats like the 14 and 17's. My only comment is how big it is and how
difficult it might be to single launch and such, Do you boat in open
or protected water, if protected, I might even go a couple feet
smaller. If open water, get a good skid protector on the keel, and
some good bumpers.
Good point. That in-between size can be awkward.
If a person always has at least one able crew along...no problem. If
not, I'd be tempted to either go a bit bigger and keep the boat at a
mooring/slip, or go smaller to something easily handled by one person. As
you say, a lot depends on where you boat and the conditions you're brave
or foolish enough to venture out in.
Jeez...I used to launch and retrieve the original Yo Ho alone once in a
while. This was a boat 25' long, plus another seven feet for the pulpit
and outboard bracket. Close to 7000 pounds with fuel. On and off a bunk
trailer. I could launch a 21-footer blindfolded.
Guess I'm think of my 19 foot sailboat....requiring mast raising, rigging
etc and the shallow launch ramps we have here. Our floating docks are
usually out of easy reach to float off & on by holding the bow & stern
lines.
My 21'er was a handful for one person, especially if the launch ramp had no
dock alongside. Luckily, Breezy Point, where Harry kept the YO HO, had a
dock alongside the ramp, making launching and retrieval pretty easy.

John H- Hide quoted text -

- Show quoted text -

I don't really have a problem with either my 18' Chris, or my 23'
Marquis. My lakes do have launch docks with good bumper railing. I
dont' drive up onto the trailer, because the boat always settles in
lpsided because of the additional weight on the helm side, so I get it
all centered pull the craft forward, hook and crank. works ok, just
have to take a bit of time, but not bad.

As long as the docks are there, it goes well. Today we went down to Pohick
Bay, off the Potomac River, just to sit and watch folks launch and retrieve
boats (and to give the dog a chance to play in the water). What a blast.
There are always some fools around to make the watching enjoyable!

Pohick Bay is an accident waiting to happen. Too many idiots in too
small of a space.

If you want to talk about a body of water that shouldn't allow low/no
transom boats then Pokick Bay on a Saturday, Sunday or Holiday.

went
out to Virginia Oaks the next day and shot a 104, just to deinflate my

I shot a 51 on the front and a 44 on the back. Interestingly the back is
harder than the front. Lots of elevations changes and some blind tee
shots. I am going to play Blue Mash on Wed. Aug 29th.

That looks like a more difficult proposition. The white tees there have
the
same slope as the senior tees at our local course (Greendale). I've not
yet
played any of the courses in Maryland. We're going to Bowling Green on
Tuesday, which is a nice course for low scores. It's the first course I
played and shot below 100. Not much water...(boating related, you know).

Whatever. It's about $675.00, unless you're on NY's poverty plan. Not
funny.

That doesn't seem to be out of line for what you get in case of an
emergency or life threatening situation.

True, but if I recall, the poverty plan becomes available at an income level
of 42K. While it may seem that a family with maybe 2 kids should be able to
manage on (picking a number here) 45K, there are families whose lifestyles
were based on let's say 75K, but their employers shut down. So, suddenly,
the "opportunity" to pay for the insurance no longer exists. Here, Kodak is
an example.

I pay $1,100 per month for medical. What are you bitching about?

I was at $1200 until wife went on Medicare in June. But I did not live the
lifestyle of a $100k person, and saved a lot of money over the years. I
remember in the 1980's and company I was working for at the time was laying
off. Most of us engineers were making in the $60-70k range. And fellow
engineer was worried. He had 5 credit cards maxed out. I told him to worry
about the assembly line workers that were making $20k and most were single
parents. We at least had degrees and marketable skills so would be able to
get a new engineering job shortly.

$125 / month with $3k deductible. Depends on your and your kids age.

Where did you find that information?

SWAG. Put enough deductible in and the rates go way down. You should not
worry about the everyday costs, you need to cover the catastrophes. Paying
for the yearly or biannual physical out of pocket will save you a lot of
money in the end. Just like car insurance. Get a $1000 deductible over a
$250 deductibe and you can lower your rate $2-400.

Why?

You made a blanket statement about everyone having an opportunity to buy
health insurance. If a product is not affordable for you, you do NOT
have the opportunity. So, I need to know what number you are imagining
in your head.

Everyone in the US does have the opportunity to buy it. That is a fact.

Why they may opt out is another factor.

There are 4 main reasons why they would decline:

1. It is not within the budget considering more important expenses such
as shelter, food and clothing.
2. It is within the budget but the money is spent on a more extravagant
life style.
3. It is within the budget but who needs it........I am young and
invincible.
4. It is within my budget but based on my income I can self insure and
obsorb any and all costs.

When looking at the number of uninsured.............give me a breakdown
of those 4 categories. Links to factual data are required.

Class dismissed until Monday.

I trust you are working hard on this problem Doug. I will accept the
answers in percentages or number of people.

I am sure it happens all the time. When it does, the family needs to change
their lifestyle. No more cable tv. No more eating out. No more going out
to watch movies. Just local low cost vacations. Switch to dial up
internet service. Drop the cell phones. Drive less. Use coupons and shop
for bargains. Get a second job.

Heck, come to think of it that is sort of like the lifestyle (less internet)
I was born and raised in and we had a great time. We all pitched in and no
one complained.

A family of 4 can certainly live on $45k/year.

Your "why" was answered yesterday. You cannot make claims

Whatever. It's about $675.00, unless you're on NY's poverty plan. Not
funny.

That doesn't seem to be out of line for what you get in case of an
emergency or life threatening situation.

True, but if I recall, the poverty plan becomes available at an income
level of 42K. While it may seem that a family with maybe 2 kids should
be able to manage on (picking a number here) 45K, there are families
whose lifestyles were based on let's say 75K, but their employers shut
down. So, suddenly, the "opportunity" to pay for the insurance no
longer exists. Here, Kodak is an example.

Then you have to change your lifestyle. Get a different career. You
may have to flip burgers for awhile, but no where is it declared that if
you have a $75k job, you always get to live that lifestyle. And if you
lived a $45k lifestyle while making $75k, your investments would tide
you over.

You're right. It's easy to get a different career, usually in a day or
two, especially if your specialty was film emulsions. Thanks for clearing
this up for me.

Do you have a degree in chemistry? Or just poured the emulsions into a
vat? You may have to move, you may have to go back to school, you may have
to go to a $40k job and not buy a car every 4 years. You get unemployment
for up to 26 weeks. Time to find another job or career. You may have to
move. Life is tough at times, but this is not a world with guaranteed
lifetime employment.

I said you were right. Therefore, any time a family suddenly cannot afford
insurance, it's their fault for reproducing outside of your approved
criteria, and having too many luxuries.

You're right. All done.

Sorry did not mean for this to take off into a meaningless political
argument....

You are correct everyone has the opportunity to purchase health insurance,
just as everyone has the opportunity to drive a SUV, or buy a 150 foot
luxury yacht. But every person lives their life based on their choices.
You could go into hock and buy the yacht but could you afford to drive it?

Most people make choices based on what they can afford. I was accused of
being a commie because I suggested taxing certain "luxury" items to conserve
fuel by making energy in-efficient toys less affordable.

People are easily manipulated by the media, TV and movies - why else would
everyone suddenly decide that they need the biggest car on the road just to
commute to and from work? I'll repeat it again, they have the opportunity
to buy a monster SUV, but they should have to pay either extra road tax (it
cost more in wear and tear as well as parking spots), gas tax ( by you
burning more than "your share" it costs everyone else more - why should I
subsidize you?) or Luxury tax. You have the opportunity to buy and drive
what ever you want, you make your own choices, but if you are going to burn
more energy there should be an additional charge to persuade you to
conserve.

John H- Hide quoted text -
- Show quoted text -
Yeah, really?
--
John H- Hide quoted text -

You're right, but it's a fun place to go!

Nothing is forever, and I have gone from good job to wondering where my

Back in '02 I was laid off in late February and my wife was laid off
three weeks later. Going from two paychecks in the high tech arena to no
paychecks was a shocker but, we regrouped and went out looking for new
jobs. Albeit we were lucky enough to have a large employer base in our
area. We have stayed in the DC area for just that reason.

Pick yourself up and make some plans and make some decisions and get on
