I've replaced the water pump (impeller). It seems to still run hot and
no water out of the telltale. There is water coming out of the shifting rod grommet. Wisner, who has a great website about repair, has suggested that the thermostat needs cleaned and that the water jacket might be plugged. My questions: Can I get the thermostat cover off without having to pull the whole powerhead? It looks like there are 2 bolts way down in the cover and they look to be trouble. Can the water jacket be flushed? I could sure use some suggestions here. My level of mechanic's expertise is such that I can do brakes, thermostat replacement on my truck, recently ![]() I feel like I can do this work. This motor seems to run well and there wasn't much salt or corrosion in the water pump area, the bolts all came out without shearing off. Looks like it has been reasonably well cared for. I'd like to try and take good care of it and do it myself. Thanks for your help. GMC |

With initial of GMC you should be able to fix anything! Just kidding.
It is common for insects to dob mud in the tell-tale hole, run some stiff wire in there to see if it is plugged. After replacing the pump impeller are you absolutely certain that you got the copper water line properly inserted into the power head? The thermostat is near the top back of the power head and is usually attached with 2 1/4 inch bolts (7/16 head). Unless you run in unusually cold water, you can remove the thermostat permanently. If the cooling system is blocked with mud and residue you will have to remove the exhaust side plate and clean out the water passages. (I have worked on 100's of outboards and yours would be the 1st with a blocked water jacket.) If all else fails remove the lower unit, remove the prop attach an electric drill to the drive shaft. Place the lower unit in a pail of water and run the drill, expect to see water being pumped. If this is not the case, investigate what may be wrong in the pump housing. I can not comment on the "2 bolts way down...". need a clearer definition of these, "look to be in trouble", I can not speculate what the trouble might be, please explain. If you are getting water out of the shift seal, you have a more serious problem than a simple flush or thermostat will solve. Working on this engine can be problematic - I'd advise getting a SELOC manual for it if you can find one. Other than that - can't help much. If it is like a 15 Mariner / Yamaha you may have missed lining up the water tube and the pump. The pump is just pumping in to the leg. |

Thanks for your reply Don.
I've got a service manual coming. I'm sure I got the tube lined up into the new rubber receiver that came with the pump kit. In looking for the thermostat, I thought it was under a long thin plate at the back of the head. It looks like there are about 6-8 bolts holding it on with 2 of them below the line of the case at the bottom. I sure hope that's not it. I'd like to remove the thermostat and at least check it. Do you mind if I stay with you on this while I try and get this fixed? Thanks again. Oh, yea...just so you know...I drive a Ford.
