How safe is it to buy something on-line with a credit card using the

If you browser is showing the lock on that web site then that means that
the all the exchanges between you and the web site are encrypted. It is
not a completely foolproof encryption but nobody outside of places like
nsa have got the computer horsepower to break it. Plus they would have
to intercept your actual traffic to even begin and the comm companies
have got the major routing nodes and lines pretty well locked down.

Thanks. I've also done it for years without any problems so far but as a
precaution I always use the same credit card that I specifically asked to
have only a $1000 dollar limit on. I figured that way my liability, if
any, would be limited if someone was able to get the info.

You can ask for some one time use numbers from the CC company for just this
kind of shopping.

To infiltrate and then what? Call home with what info it finds?

Most spyware is benign and just tracks marketing preferences so as to spam
you better. Dangerous spyware can indeed phone home vital info you type
in, so as to rob you.

I've never seen a single thing come to me via Ebay. It's usually those
"freeware" sites that come complete with "free spyware" added in. That's
why I specified a *safe* place for whatshisname to download DVDShrink3.2.

The best way to be safe is to download nothing, past that, be SURE of your
source for "freeware".
The best source for getting spyware added is the "free anti-spyware"
sites.
etc....

Purchase from vendors you would also do face to fact business with. Or,
get a one-time use credit card account. to make Internet purchases.

Citibank makes it easy with a little button icon that sits on your
browser toolbar. I click on the icon and I log on to get a one time
account number. You can then autofill to complete the order form
including name and address info.

Bidders email addys are NOT visible to the public.

ebay is constantly being "hacked". seems like they can get your email
add's. but can only get sensetive info from you. Like, getting these
bogus letters, and clicking on the links provided in the letter. Some
will ask for your password, some will take you to an open page of
nothing. but has provided an anti security worm, to infiltrate
(variation of a trojan horse) to seek and gather the info.

I've got 2 Ebay accounts (buyer and seller). I've NEVER gotten emails to
my
buyers account.
I only get them to my sellers account if my email addy was in the ad - or
if
the phish came through the official ebay emails. I totally disagree that
Ebay is being hacked. There's a reason that your email is being laid bare
to
the world. - really.

-W

I have not received any email regarding my Ebay account but I have received
fake emails regarding my Paypal account. Before responding I checked with
Paypal and was told the emails were fraud so I flushed them.

Know what the retail price of the product is, purchase from established
members and pay with Pay (using a credit card)....following these guidelines
I have not had a problem.

I have.

And to add insult to injury, I opened a Pay Pal account (which is
owned by eBay I believe) because sometimes people want to pay for
things via Pay Pal (which is fine) and within a half hour, I received
three phishing Pay Pal messages asking me to confirm my account.

That afternoon I received four more - next day six in the morning and
a couple more in the afternoon.

Now you tell me why that happened.

Add insult to injury - there is a blog that I donate to using that
same Pay Pal account and the same thing happened as when I opened it.

And I get at least two or three a week about the Pay Pal account.

I do not have a paypal account and get the same phishing messages.

Windows XP and Me contain a program called msconfig (Start-Run-type msconfig
and select Startup) that will identify those programs that will autorun.

Or, go to http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Autoruns.html for a freeware
tool that does the same and more, and works on all Windows platforms. Much
safer than editing the registry.

At the same site look at ProcessExplorer; this is a tool that provides
information on every process running on your computer.
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilitie...sExplorer.html If you're not
sure if a process should be running go to
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php to identify the good guys and bad
guys.

Oh, well. Time to clean it up and add some antispyware, I guess.

I have over 200 successful transactions on ebay, as densnet. and
have saved thousands of dollars. ONE incident where a girl sent me a
toy instead of a $400. computer. I called the creditcard company, and
quashed it. NO CHARGE. Then I tried working with squaredeal, paypal,
and ebay, and got nowhere.
As for spyware, Virus etc protection I spent $70.00 for V-Com
SystemSuite. When I get a new, or used computer,OFFLINE, I remove all
norton/symantec crap, then using regedit remove all references to it.
I install Systemsuite, and make a rescue disk.I have had virtually 0
problems for the last 5 or 6 years. They notify me when a new pattern
file is avaliable for download, and they stay ahead of the onslaught of
the sickos. The Systemsuite firewall is very effective, and you can
also monitor traffic in, and out of your system. Note: (I get NO
compensation for my opinion).
Tell your wife to quit going to the "free" game sites. There is
NOTHING free on the web! They are notorious for embedding trash in the
screensavers, and games, and harvest info from you. If she doesn't do
that stuff I apologize for making that assumption.
I send ALL spoofs, and phishes to the appropriate sites, so they
have tools to stomp those critters.
Have fun, be safe
