"Eisboch" wrote in message Thanks. It's not a huge issue, but more of a pain. My prior experiences of trying various monitoring and protection software like Norton and others were that they bogged the computer down sometimes and were constantly requiring you to upgrade, download, or something. Plus, my computer has always run fine while my wife's computer which has every protection device known to the computer world installed, is always slow and bogging down. They are basically the same computer (HP 8000) running on the same home wireless network. Oh, well. Time to clean it up and add some antispyware, I guess. Start Run Regedit Look under: Hkey_ Local_ Machine Software MicrosoftWindowsRun Get to know what's in there (runs at startup) so you can tell if something gets added. Most new crap will hide THERE, not in the statup folder of your start-menu .. -W |

How would you possibly know if something new was added? There must be a ga-zillion files there. Eisboch |

Before you do make a new restore point using "System Restore". |

You guys are pushing my small envelope of computer knowledge. I was thinking that if I found something strange, I would edit one word in the file ... add a letter or something .... and then see if the problem went away. If not ... I could go back and remove the added letter. But ... maybe I better let someone who knows what they are doing do it. I had an old 486 computer running Windows 3.1 that I had not used for years. I started playing with it... seeing how many files in the Windows directory I could delete and still have the computer run. Kinda like playing computer roulette. I made it quite a ways before it gave up. Eisboch Eisboch |

Better yet..... write down EVERTHING that starts under "run" and do a
web-search on it. That bad ones ARE known and will appear. -W "Clams Canino" wrote in message ink.net... "Eisboch" wrote in message You guys are pushing my small envelope of computer knowledge. Go he www.securitytango.com The site's run by 3 guys who have been handling problems like this since forever. Read the page, then on the left, click "Let's Dance". You could follow all the instructions completely, or just read and find the link to the free virus scan - I don't recall its name, but it's there. These guys have helped thousands of listeners via their radio show. One guy's the network admin for the University of Rochester, and another's been building, selling and servicing machines for many years. The 3rd guy - I dunno what he does. Their suggestions are all 100% dependable. |

Best time to start is when you do a clean windows install. Then check it as
you add your software. I only have 2 things in mine - both for my Nvidia card. When I do a ctrl/alt/delete and click "processes" I only have 24 running - including the printer stuff. How about YOU??? Heh... -W "Eisboch" wrote in message ... "Clams Canino" wrote in message ink.net...
